epic crescendoes and comedowns

i live for this sort of thing. the last headfuck for me has been sally shapiro's hold me so tight. near the middle of the song the synths take over and elevate into bliss-space, really transcendent and wonderful in a stars in the desert night sort of way. it's such a simple mechanism, it's almost absurd, but it works! i'm completely transported every time. and just as soon as this happens the synths come down and i'm back with sally's isolated voice. perfect.

Richard Pinhas - Iceland is my favourite epic synth workout, in more of a stars in the arctic kind of way.

yes, that's a nice one. my candidate for ridiculously epic (moog, i think) workout: popol vuh's vuh. and more recentish: mono junk's the place.

No synths involved but my vote for most epic crescendo: the last few minutes of John Adams' El Dorado Pt 1: A Dream of Gold.

There are some great Spiritualised tracks of course...... and Sigur Ros...... also I'm rather partial to Pulp's Sunrise (from the 'We Love Life' LP)

Recently I have been enjoying an anthemic track by Micah P Hinson called 'You're Only Lonely' (from his last album) - one huge crescendo!

Lastly - seek out 'No Tree Will Grow' by Supersister - great bit of psychedelic folk from the 70s...

First post BTW - so I say a big HI to you all!

ditto on gybe.

any links for any of the above? (gybe not included)

rufus wainwright's "oh what a world" builds wonderfully, i must say. i don't know if it's cool on here to like him but i don't care :p

How about Popol Vuh's 'Vuh'. The part where the metal clanking crescendo comes in is just one of the heaviest things I've heard, and the whole track is an icily show build.

On a pop tip maybe Kleepup ft. Robyn - With Every Hearbeat.

Yes, Vuh is great. But the crescendo thing has become a sort of tired cliché since tons of n-th generation postrock bands after GYBE and Mogwai have used it to death.

interesting artist mono junk, been enjoying 'Channel B' and 'Am I Ok' lots recently. heard a short snippet of 'the place' last night (it's from '95 I think) and it does sound pretty cool, just debating whether to part with 16 quid for the album (gloom, dum records), given that ther other tracks are relatively hit and miss.
