are brits the most unique euros?

taking into account my very brief stay on this continent, and very much limited experience of people -- been hanging out with Italians and Germans mostly (and have been friends with Frenchies and Czechs, etc. etc., in the past) -- it seems to me that the english are more different from other europeans than other europeans are from eachother. they are like their own breed. the sensibilities, the humour... at once the most polite and the most rude - depending on levels of inebriation.

i will surely get a very biased opinion here...

I think even the British have a tendency to see ourselves as separate from the rest of Europe, I mean we are an island. There's us, and there's "the continent."

Oh sod off with your stupid generalisations.

wasn't sure if this would be offensive... don't mean to be.

but it is valid in terms of at least culture, no? you have to admit that there is something which can be construed as a particularly "British sensibility". i realize there are all kinds of people in every country, but you can say that, for instance, that Koreans are in some ways the most unique in east asia (don't necessarily think that but just as example), or that Costa Ricans are sometimes more snobby than other people of South America.

maybe this is a conversation i should only have with close friends... if it's really offensive mods feel free to lock or delete...

i hope so... (not that you are freaks but that edward was joking!)

the reason for this is that at a Kompakt party last weekend was talking to a group of brits here on vacation, they were art people but totally into grime. for about 20 minutes they tried to get me up to speed on new slang words... fuck if i can remember any of them now but at the time it was fucking hilarious. certainly the most interesting people i talked to all night (the under aged russian girls were a contender tho)

well i love you but.... what if i said "are chinese americans the weirdest americans?"
it's pretty off key.

now actually i am pretty sure i am weird as fuck.
but yunno, no more than anyone else on here regardless of nationality.

Perhaps you consider the English weird because we share a tongue with Americans.
You are able to have much more detailed and involved conversations with someone speaking the same first language. Perhaps you would find Germans (for example) just as strange if you spoke that language fluently.

good point swears... but for instance i have a hard time imagining slang as rich and colorful as british slang in Germany... and the humour... you have to admit british humour is pretty unlike other places. i can't wait to visit -- i hear everyone is drunk by 11PM (when the pubs close i guess)

but i suppose everyone is unique in their own ways.

(tried changing "weird" to "unique" in the subject header but the main one won't change)

bruno yer right belgians are pretty unique... especially the afrocentric ones :D

Mr. Tea

Let's Talk About Ceps
In my (limited) experience the Germans can be both incredibly polite and appallingly rude; they're great to talk to, and will help you find places, tell you where's good to go and all that, but inside a club or a bar, they don't have the foggiest concept of queueing for anything and woe betide you if you're in a crowded area - they'll just barge straight past and appear to be constructed entirely from shoulders and elbows.

I think the comment about noticing the eccentricities of a country you share a language with is spot on - who was it that called the UK and US "two countries separated by the same langauge"? I think there's a subconscious expectation of similarity, because of the language and shared culture (music, film etc.) so that the differences seem so much more stark and unexpected. When I've been to America I've noticed that so many things are almost, but not quite, the same, and it's the not quite that catches you out. (Of course, there are very big and obvious differences, too.)

In terms of general weirdness, I hold it to be self-evident that the Japanese take the world title, hands down. I mean, have you seen the CARTOONS they watch over there?

Broadly speaking, Zhao, I think we Brits think of ourselves as the least European of Europeans, and there are a lot of reasons why that might be - trans-Atlanticism, island vs continent (and the difference that makes historically - no successful invasions in 1,000 years, fixed borders, etc). Some of those qualities are shared by Ireland, but they've always done well out of the EU, so generally the Irish are more Europhilic than us.

Mr Tea's right - things that are closest to us often appear the strangest. In a way Japan's easier to deal with because it's just 'oh, those Japanese, they're so weird' (when actually the most unsettling thing about Tokyo for me was how normal it was compared to expectations).

You have to remember that we won the war, unlike those French poofs who surrendered the moment the Jerries came into site. We smoke, eat and drink too much because we're hard bastards. The French think they're sophisticated by looking down their conks at our cuisine, but it's not our fault - while they were lazing around, eating cheese that stinks of athlete's foot and inventing new sexual perversions, we were spending all our dosh on weapons, to make sure the Third Reich got the hiding it bloody deserved. We didn't have time to make 'croque monsieurs', in any case, chops and boiled cabbage are good enough for any man. Also, we know we're shit at everything, so we don't have to try that hard or live up to expectations. Unlike your average fucking Italian, who throws a tantrum like a spoilt little pageant queen if you insult his pesto-guzzling old bat of a mum. Our transvestites are much better as well, they beat up straights in rugby shirts, the German ones just listen to shit microhouse and get upset if they chip a fake nail.

The Finns are pretty cool, they're the most practical, placid people when they're sober. Get a few bottles of vodka down them and they morph into viking beserkers, smashing tables to matchwood, headbutting their spouses and setting fire to their cars 'for a laugh'. The next day, all covered in blood and bruises and stinking of puke, they just have a shower and shave and go back to the office.

what happened to my laughing icon?

anyway... i think music is probably best in UK in europe. rather disapointed so far by berlin. outside of my friend's avant jazz night and some silly post modern cover-bands i've seen there seems to be just lots of shitty techno everywhere. the Mobilee party was pretty good, the Kompakt party was at an upscale club so the djs catered to the cheesy crowd i suspect half of which have no idea what Kompakt is. Karnival was kind of fun actually, parades blasting ragga at high volumes rolling down the street - but that's hardly German music - german ragga is like, good for 5 min. (seeed are fun but gets real old real fast)

i will have to come down to your neck of the grime to hear some real shit...
