Box of Dub/Skreamizm 3/DA 5?

haven't noticed discussion here about a few recent releases that in the past probably would have been topics of discussion: soul jazz "box of dub" comp, "skreamizm 3" and "dubstep allstars 5"...have people lost interest in the bigger names? moved on to other newer names? hmm.

granted, i sit in isolation far from "the scene," so what the hell do i know but it strikes me that perhaps a corner has been turned. just an observation.

i like "losing control" on "skreamizm 3," the rest seems ok. haven't heard the other two. any thoughts?

DA5 seems a bit snore-snore. Mixing is pretty spot on but the tunes just don't seem to be the same calibre as on previous volumes. It's a bit relentlessly jump-uppy. Maybe I just need to give it another listen. Or hear it really loud at a house-party.

Losing Control is absolutely incredible. i loved it on radio, but when i heard it in a club i actually couldn't believe it. i think its one of his finest moments. rest of it im not really feeling so much, primarily cos they have been rinsed to such a ridiculous degree.

Haven't heard the other two in full, but Box of Dub looks pretty great. Magnetic City i think is an incredible track, and the b-side of that 12 I Wait is a grower (if somewhat uninteresting). But Unite, the Sub Version tracks, Sub Island, Guilty, Surround Me... all really very good, very interesting, very forward thinking. I rate the job that Soul Jazz have done.

Im actually very happy that discussion on dubstep here (and elsewhere) has dropped off, i think too much analysis can stunt. it was becoming too self aware i think

bit of shameless hype here but I think it's relevant...

if you want to hear music from all ends of the dubstep spectrum tune into the ruffage sessions tonight on subfm from 8-10

Simon Scott (Exodus) who puts on the massive sub dub and dmz exodus raves with the iration steppas will be playing a set representing what the big, big producers are doing. he'll be playing the big dubs from people like mala, skream, benga etc.

Me, Ramadanman and Pangaea will be representing our sound as well - playing lesser known producers - deeper, slightly leftfield stuff, older two step, the techno influenced side of things and forthcoming hessle audio material.

So through the course of the show you'll get a pretty good idea of how much variety there is in dubstep at the moment :)

i'm very disappointed with DA5 ... it sounds like a slowed-down ca. 2004 Andy C set

N-Type's radio shows are a lot of fun, but without his constant jokey presence, you really notice how grating the jump-up tunes are. the mix has maybe ONE tune based around sub rather than midrange, and it's by Caspa ffs.

the Mr. UFO et al sets are much closer to the original spirit of dubstep IMO :)

Skreamizm 3 is mostly a lot of fun I think.

Lose control is great as elgato says - that switch up is really funky, and both Make Me and Chest Boxing are big ol' ravey headbangers - the way the bassline gets progressively more stoopid in Make Me is nice. I also prefer the instrumental of Check It - I think the vocal is way too loud on this one and yes it does sound a bit out of time like no-one adjusted for the latency or something.

There's plenty of sub on the mix - even the mid rangey bangers are still backed by some serious weight. I'm pretty much with you though. Without N-Type's banter it's a bit pointless :( Would much rather listen to him on Rinse. It's a problem with studio mixes in general - they tend to sound pretty sterile anyway, but with an N-Type set the difference between hearing him live and on CD is even more pronounced. The whole point of going to see him play is that he absolutely destroys the rave; if you want a considered, well thought out 70 minute sit down set, you look elsewhere.

Best compliment ever, thanks :D

It's quite simple I suppose but it sounds so lush and crisp. Mastered to perfection this one.

Yeah man! Jason at Transition did such an excellent job. Put You Down has the edge for me I think :)

We play a lot of swing-y percussive stuff on our show if that's your thing.

I actually logged on dissensus recently specifically to find discussion on the Box o Dub. But of course, you cant search for "box" "of" or "dub". Im glad someone started a thread about it, cuz im anxious to hear some of the thoughts of those whove heard it.

I've only just got Box of Dub, and listened to it briefly. It seems a lot more "dub" than "step", on first listen. The tracks that were pre released are ace, as is the Burial track. The Tayo one is annoying, though. And the vocalled ones I'm not sure on.

Great review, this...

I thought 'box of dub' was annoying all the way through, to be honest - a bunch of corny cod-reggae.

I don't mind the odd faux reggae track (Dutch Flowerz=OK) but I don't think they're dubstep's strength (putting it lightly). Compiling a bunch of them together makes for a real clanger of a record.

n types mix started off exciting., then went boring and all those coki things where he just puts drums under an accapella dont cut it. my sweet lord when i had that on in the office and that excretable 'ruff lovin' loving you acappella came on there was a look of sheer horror on pppl in the office' faces, it really was a terrible idea, so lazy.
there is a prononunced difference between that and the half way split between kind tubby and groove connection that burial gets on his box of dub track, which was ace.

ppl who actually like dubstep and were happy to hear the new mix, some of em anyway..

it started off fresh then too many just dj tool things, and not in a good way, as i said in the shackleton thread there should be tracks made which are just actual dj tools, rhythm tracks and melodies etc, made specifically for building rhythmic density and melodic, atmospheric colour.

skreamizm 3 = pretty good actually. losing control as mentioned is ace - i've cut it up massively on the new mix and it's just rave mentalism. Check it is FANTASTIC, she's not on autopilot in any way shape or form.

I have pasted the tracklisting for DA 5 from discogs below. And it brings up a question. With most of these tracks lasting 1-2 minutes, is this standard for N-Type? Does this represent some sort of quick switching in dubstep that is mirrored in the clubs/radio?

Being a US resident w/o gobs of cash to throw around, i tend to not buy the mix cds, but rather the individual records that i want, so i havent heard a lot of mixes, other than what i dl.

Would this mean that this was made on Ableton or some other mixing software?

That's just N-Type really, his mixing is usually very fast. I think he's said this mix was done on tointables.
