Portishead playing or just curating? Saw them in Blackpool Tower once - one of the best gigs I'v ever seen.

Talking of interesting gigs, just heard Sly Stone is headliing Lovebox, a few hundred yards from my flat. My heart is pounding.

Portishead playing - they're incredible live; amazing sonics and dynamics, and Beth manages to impart such heart-stopping intensity into her stylistic excesses, like she's come out through the other side of camp into a twilight zone of frightening emotion; like a cross between Mulholland Drive's Club Silencio "Yolando" performance and... Laura Dern all the way through INLAND EMPIRE, actually.

Aphex Twin Dj-ing apparently.

Team Brick is a kind of one-man-band affair with a guitar, a drum (he only plays one at a time - he doesn't have the drum strapped to his back, more's the pity) and loads of sequencers and fx pedals. He also does throat singing - not very well but the distortion makes it sound ungodly. He's certainly worth seeing if you get the chance; he makes a right fucking racket.

Seasick Steve is a hip folkie - i imag ine him being a bit like willy mason, tho that's without ever having heard his music. great name tho

I saw Team Brick the other day, not at ATP. He's really good. He's also the absolute spit of Boomnoise, which was weird.

The trouble with ATP is it's just so dreary, not a lot of fun. So many of line-ups are just kind of austere and anhedonic and it becomes this thing for people who think their music taste is really great. The Autechre one was the last one that felt like a party to me because they had DJs playing music you can dance to all night long.

X-Post with STN, glad you enjoyed the dreariness ;)

It's not that austere, the floor is always covered with drunken sleepers and there's nice little chalet (okay, I'll give you that) parties. Aphex Twin was good, from what I remember.

GZA tried to do Shimmy Shimmy Ya as an ODB tribute with the crowd doing fill-ins but very few people knew the words which was a poor show. He was wicked though.

thats why i didnt go, ive always imagined atp tends to be full of self congratulatory 'indie kid with a wire subscription' types comparing slint b-sides and spray painted wolf eyes lathe cuts but secretly pining for modest mouse. im done with uk festivals, in europe you cant get annoyed by people talking crap afterwards. And theres usually a beach.

was aphex any good? saw him in manchester on friday and after the debacle of getting tickets in august, finding out they were invalid last week, going outside the venue at midnight to sell my brothers ticket and getting 4 of them at half face value actually hearing him dj was a huge let down. the crowd was 6th form geeks(the wheezing acned type rather than the hipster type) and crusties with glow sticks. vibert was good but as for rdj i may as well have gone to see penduluum it was that boring. from what he was playing i can only assume he was mocking the crowd. left at 3 and raved with some gays at homoelectric for an hour and had loads of fun.

Tell us more STN! Did Portishead play new stuff, and if so how did it sound? Their contribution to that Gainsgourg tribute LP was worryingly weak.

Looks like I don't need to worry about them going trad-rockist, then! Industrial/Silver Apples/techno/rock/?!

Really looking forward to the new album based on this!

There is a beach at Minehead! Bollock-freezing admittedly.

I really enjoyed the Dirty three-curated ATP earlier this year. And you're right, there is a lot of people like the ones you describe above. But thats still better than being stuck in a muddy field with 50,000 Foo Fighters fans. They need to cut down a bit on the boring post-rock bands though...

What were Earth like? Boris?

Both great - Earth were doing Hexstatic type stuff.

Neither were anywhere near loud enough, which didn't matter too much for them but was a bit of a let do)))wnn for Sunn O))) (compensated for by Attila dressing up as a tree).
