And, sure as night follows day:

I was looking this name up and it turns out that one of the translations of Abdul from Arabic is "an assortment of various types of the same broad category of item" and Hakim can mean "a small baked and crispy sweetmeat high in sugar content".

So it seems we really are dealing with an Arabic equivalent of our favourite conspiracist on this one.

Funny seeing Islamist dickheads on Twitter giving David Baddiel a hard time about kids in Palestine, and all the usual Wahhaboutism.

Robertson:

He suggested that American agents should assassinate Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez , and said the stroke that left Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon in a coma was God's punishment for Israel's withdrawal from the Gaza Strip.

In both cases he issued an apology within days.

Not quite the same thing, IMO.

And the fatwa still stands, BTW.

fatwas can't technically be withdrawn because they are non-binding. So even if the Iranian government apologised, it would mean jack shit. clueless.

I love how Brits (who have never been) exceptionalise Israel in the middle east, though. Almost like white south africa hmm. Surrounded by a bunch of barbaric savages.

Not privy to the shitstorm you're referencing, though.

Just bellends giving him a hard time for being Jewish, is all. To be clear, most of the people I saw doing this were white Brits rather than Islamists. I just wanted to use 'Wahhaboutism.'

Oh ok. I don't particularly care for Britain these days. Even their women are intent upon imitating the shrill American high school cheerleader, with an added dose of FBPE. Back in my day it was different, of course, of course.

why are you replying to 15 year old posts? no one knows or cares any more. personally, I feel quite positively disposed to fatwas against authors these days. put them all up against the wall.

someone told me the other day that 'Abdul' means 'Slave of', which is usually followed by one of the names of Mohammad, so generally it's a bit weird if you call someone by just 'Abdul' and you need to use the name that follows it ('Adbul Haq' 'Abdul Aziz' and so on)

one of those illuminating things that stuck in my head

Abdul is a transliteration of Arabic for "servant of the", to be followed by one of the 99 names, or epithets, of Allah; e.g., Abdullatif. Both the epithet Latif ('the All-gentle') and the whole name Abdullatif ('servant of the All-gentle') are given to Muslim men.

As I understand it, "slave (of)" is usually considered the most direct English translation (backed up by a quick check on Google Translate).

I do love the idea of a name meaning "Slave of the All-gentle."
