the cuba album is ok - i dont think he went far enough with it. its pretty surface, the cuban influence. i do like the percussive element but its just an extension of old dubstep like shackleton and malas own stuff etc. tbh i like the tracks that basically sound like normal mala and the other stuff is interesting and nice but it can be a bit 'anodyne/downtempo world fusion'.

yeah i basically agree but as there's only 2 or 3 tracks that fit into the 'downtempo world fusion' category i think overall it's great.

I just bought the boxset for Mala in Cuba.

It will make me play the whole thing instead of picking out my faves. Looks nice anyways

Been listening to that Mala album, not sure how I'd compare it to his earlier works (probably I just wouldn't), but I'm definitely enjoying it. I haven't really chosen any standouts, it's just a nice continuous vibe, great for when you have to go through pages upon pages of anatomy revision.

off to System tonight. anyone else? or am i the only one on here who still goes to dubstep nights :slanted:

man I've been wanting to go to a decent dubstep night in fucking ages but my friends have all been scarred by brostep so badly that I just don't think i'd be able to coax any of them into it these days. When is the next one benjy?

i've been feeling disgustingly nostalgic about dubstep this year... sad really.

yeah ive been feeling this too... would love to know when the next one is AND also what the kind of era of dubstep you're likely to hear is - can anyone give me a run down of what kind of vibe it is?

All I know is that for years I've wanted to see Loefah, but now all he'll do is spin mediocre records with tinny drums with hair that makes Skrillex seem tame in comparison... I just can't deal.

it's not like i want to go to a kind of "back to 2006" nostalgia-fest club night (though I suppose that would be pretty good too)

i do wanna hear NEW stuff... But i'm just worried that it's all either studenty brostep guff or really boring high-end kryptic minds-style stuff.

but then as I said my knowledge of dupstep these days is severely limited. there must be some good new stuff... benjy?

vibe is nice! not sure when the next one is but i'd be surprised if anyone's dissapointed by it, it's pretty much exactly what you would expect a night put on by mala/vivek to be (in a good way). i'd say it leans more towards the the warmer, dubby side of dubstep than the cold/sharp/mechanical sounding stuff you would hear youngsta or icicle play - certainly no brostep. iirc the first ~two hours or so is purely dub/reggae. i was worried it would feel like a nostalgia night but somehow it doesnt, despite lots of older 06 era stuff/dmz backcatalogue getting played.

yep i think this sums it up pretty well.

the first four have been really very special nights. the closest it gets to brostep is Mala dropping a couple of rowdy Coki dubs but that's about it..

as much as the music, it's the vibes of the night that remind me of 'golden age' dubstep.. absolute niceness from the start to finish! and they system itself has gotten progressively better each time i'd say

can't wait for November 30th :)
