weird to think there are generations who never had the hot smokey club experience. small scummy rock bars/clubs didn't have industrial ventilation/air conditioning systems like places today, your hair and clothes would reek of tobacco smoke the next day.

last time I went to a club I spent most of the night outside in the smoking area - kills the atmosphere inside when all the action is outside

no smoking ban at free / squat parties though

Nobody young smokes anymore I don't think. When I was out at that thing with Shiels I was smoking in the crowd and kept looking around for solidarity with some other cancerous wreck and there was not a fag to be seen.

smoking have long been uniquely demonised among bad habits i think, from the ban on smoking in places you previously would have gone to with the express intention of smoking, like a pub, to those pictures on the packs that get more and more disgusting (latest one i got was a stroke warning with a picture of a brain split in half with a massive blood blob on one side of the brain like the jam in a doughnut) as i often used to say, you don't have to drive a car around without a picture of a fatal traffic accident stuck on the doors and bonnet do ya.

We currently feel the societal benefits of driving outweigh the risks. I imagine that's going to change somewhat as we transition to electric and self-driving models, mind you. Maybe we'll be "nudged" toward viewing controlling a car yourself as reckless and risking the safety of others like we're currently seeing re: declining the vaccine or not wearing a mask.
