Smoking IS cool.

vicodin is just hydrocodone with APAP in it. if you're inexperienced enough to think that's a good high, i just feel bad for you. it tears up the lining of your stomach to take that stuff in excess.

crack, on the other hand, is whack.

i really think by the time you're high on crack regularly you've already lost any interest in socially normative concepts like "coolness" you may have once had

lol, I don't do either, a double Absolut and an Embassy No1 is a good enough high for me.

Addicted to coke? Can't afford it? Try crack! Oops.

I don't get this. Crack is made from coke powder, right - so it must be more expensive, otherwise what would be the point? (from the dealer's POV, I mean.)
Or is the point just that it's cheaper per hit?

I read in the paper a while back that smokers are more likely to be successful in the office environment because of smoke breaks.

Smoke breaks are usually taken in the same area everyone in the company takes smoke breaks, and so by being a smoker you get to know everyone a lot quicker on a day-to-day basis, and if your boss is a smoker, then you'll likely end up smoking next to your boss and being forced into conversation with them.

in my experience smokers just tend be more laid back, openminded-types. a massive generalization to be sure, but there is a bond, especially now, between 3 or 4 people exiled from acceptable society and huddled under an umbrella outside a concrete office block on a shitty British autumn's day. despite being scientifically sound i HATE the attitude of the self-righteous non-smoker, i just fucking hate it:mad:

a positive effect of the ban is just this: to see what kind of people populate a club, you just look at the smokers standing outside. none of this "goes in, checks the talent, and texts the rest if it's worth paying" nonsense necessary no more.

Same here, and I don't even smoke.
I think we should have a National Hug A Smoker day, when non-smokers are encouraged to approach a smoker, hug them (while holding their breath, if necessary ;)) and thank them for paying for the NHS, state schools, roads, police, justice system, universities, public amenities...

It enters the system in a different way, hence more rapid onset of effect/stronger effect. (I believe in order of speed from slow to very fast it goes: stomach lining, nasal membrane, lungs, intravenous). Hence you get a massive hit off a lot less. The dealer doesn't care as crack is also quicker to lead to a come down (and a more savagely unpleasant one too) and hence is ridiculously addictive= massive profits.

No no no. Crack is $5 per rock--and a rock is a not all that big--but it is still infinitely cheaper to do than coke and infinitely more profitable for the dealer. It is made of coke but of massively cooked down and refined coke in a solution of ether and ammonia. These additives "spread out" the coke, so you'll end up being able to make about 2000 rocks of crack (that's $10,000 on the street) out of a single ounce of coke (street price average around $700). A single hit of crack is extremely strong and will last about as long as a rail of coke, but a rail of coke will cost you nearly $10.

This is why so many rappers call themselves Betty Crocker or make jokes about being famous cooks

the real reason you can't smoke crack and have a social life is because the unmistakeable stench of burning crack is something you can't get away with propogating on a nightclub bathroom

Yeah yeah, sure, I understand how it's made and how it works and all that, I just meant there seems to be a contradiction between it being cheaper for the user and economically advantageous for the dealer. So the argument is that each hit is stronger (because more quickly delivered), therefore better for the hard-up user because it's cheap, and better for the dealer because it's more addictive?

That and as Nomad says, each rock of crack contains less cocaine matter than in powdered form. Its win-win (apart from the poor sap with his teeth falling out and a strong motivation to commit a chain of home burglaries...:slanted:)

I think you forgot the Colombian peasant family being (on the one hand) terrorised by ruthless gangsters and (on the other) threatened with the US-led eradication of their only viable cash crop...

...oh, and the people being burgled by the crack addict.

i’m not able to handle them myself (either the smoke or the nicotine) but I am struck by how disproportionately to the general population my friends puff down on the death sticks

when the indoor smoking ban came in I was only a few months past 18 so I only have a handful of memories of what clubs were like before then but it really was better, I hate the smell of stale sweat and farts and smoking really masked that properly

when I was a student I used to get dragged to terrible indie nights and I eventually took up "social smoking" (ie one cigarette, barely puffed on) as an excuse to go outside when the DJ played Queen or Bowie because standing in the cold trying to flirt with ugly boys was preferable

I took up social chain smoking, 30 minutes outside whatever event, almost meditative. An exercise in solidarity, a shared resignation to the necessity of the whole shitty process, literally burning effigies.
