"R'n'B" recommendations PLEASE!?

Sick Boy

All about pride and egos
For new R&B definitely check out J. Holiday's debut "Back of My Lac" if you're into that sweetboy thug shit. Some savage weed jams too, and some really heavy production (esp. from the Platinum Brothers, but Los Da Mystros beat for "Bed" is cold as well). He's killing it right now.

And it goes without saying really, but T-Pain as well who, unless you've been trapped inside your fridge for the last few months, you will know from his work enslaving the American pop charts.

Get what Estelle is doing too. She's a girl from Blighty who actually is killing it in North America right now, her album runs up some pretty high profile features (Kanye West, Wyclef Jean, John Legend, Kardinall Offishall, Cee-Lo, Swizz Beatz) and "American Boy" is a great single... if you can get over the Kanye bit.

I'm pretty sure she says "wagwan blud" in the middle of American Boy too, which makes me laugh.

THE DREAM - Love & Hate

This album is really really great, only two or three tracks I skip. Really cool production and serious songwriting, the tracks hold up and up.

Easy highlights are the single "Shawty is the Shit" feat Fabolous (Shawty is a Ten on radio), "She Needs My Love" and the epic electro/disco banger "Ditch That". I don't really listen to much r+b either but I've been knocking this whole album hard for a few months now.

I agree that "Ditch That" is quite brilliant, but I found the rest of The Dream's album really underwhelming, and just a bit same ol', same ol'.

I love the bit in 'american boy' where Kanye talks about flashing his cash to impress WAGS.

'best of me part 2' is still my all time favourite RnB jam though.

Has anyone heard 'Echo' by Ciara? This is, scientifically-speaking, the catchiest song in the world right now.

I'm on my tenth straight listen...it doesn't give in!

As to what else...Cassie's 'Official Girl' is pretty good, but I'm a complete sucker for whatever they do to her voice. Every time. And R-Les is on it, as always.

'What About Us' !!

Less skippety perhaps though - more absolutely monumental.

Yeah that tune is just ridiculous. I remember having a 20 minute conversation about it with a mate trying to describe that the beat went from side to side not forward and back. I know what I meant!

Bring out the vacuum
DJ PIMP gives me shit for incessantly going on about 'What About Us'. It's great I reckon. I used to go on about the beat being so wonky, which seems a bit funny now that that particular adjective's being thrashed to death... About half of that Brandy album was on the same tip, but no better song than that one.

Thanks guys - I feel utterly vindicated! I have been extolling th evirtues of that tune for years, but seemingly it all fell on deaf ears. It's probably my favourite "nu-RnB" tune of all (I take that as everything post-Waterfalls).

Speaking of songs written for Brandy, "Come as You Are" is also phenomenal, but that would automatically get more love 'cos it's Timbaland.

OTM about the beat being wonky and side to side. There's a bit at the end where it strays for a couple of bars into the funkiest stop-start groove I've EVER heard. And does Pete Rock get a shout-out during the track, or have my ears always been deceiving me?

And the ferocity of the lyrics always gets me too. :)

Edit: OK, 'Creep' is better. Just. Although that's pre-Waterfalls. Confusing.

i think it was the first non-pop-charts music i properly got into. i sort of fell out of love with R&B in the late 90s, apart from a few tunes here and there.
