ah yeah, forgot to mention that. how dare she steal an idea from so solid. i think it's also all about the big 'hello' at 2:10 (?) and:

Speakers thumpin' hard to that Tupac and 50 track
They runnin' to the corner yellin who dat, who dat

I am a sucker for these kind of references in lyrics....Mary J has some good ones....

i think it was the first non-pop-charts music i properly got into. i sort of fell out of love with R&B in the late 90s, apart from a few tunes here and there.

As luka said, I never got new jack swing at all the first time around either (aside from No Diggity - does that count?). Can you make some recommendations please? :)

what defines new jack swing? pardon my ignorance. i love this tune to BITS (and it's blackstreet so i'm assuming it counts):

don't leave me

something like 20th listen of 'echo' and counting. i'm going to ruin this song for myself by about 3pm today, at this rate..

i always thought of blackstreet as too late to fit in that category. teddy riley is new jack swing but blackstreet was a later project no?
(im no expert)

im not totally sure when NJS ended exactly and mid 90s R&B (jodeci, mary j, swv etc) began but blackstreet is def too late to be considered NJS. esp no diggety. jodeci and mary j were kinda post-swing in that they just built on the R&B+hip hop attitude/beats thing but they def werent NJS.

Been a while since I checked in on this thread, but it's nice to see the love being bestowed upon "Echo." I still have no clue though why it was never released as the first single especially considering how piss poor "Never Ever" is. Even Jeezy can't save that waste of time.

Anyway if it's r&b recommendations we're talking about Ciara's upcoming album continues to leak and most of it has been pretty tight. "Turntables" is probably one of Danja's better productions in a while, but considering it also features Chris Brown there's a good chance now that it may just languish as an unreleased gem.

Rich Harrison's girl group Richgirl have being doing some nice things, and similarly Electrik Red are a new girl group The Dream has been overseeing and they're definitely working the Vanity 6 thing in a sweet way. "Drank In My Cup" is nasty as it comes crunk n' b, and probably one of my favourite songs of last year. Speaking of The Dream, his new album is out soon and so far I would say "Right Side Of My Brain" is the standout. There's loads more good stuff out there right now so I'm gonna have abit more of a think about it and get back to this.

I'm putting on a night of this type of stuff in London this March. Come down if it takes your fancy...

I've played this NJS mix a lot. It's by DJ Shortkut and goes by the name of 'Going Uptown'. I can't help thinking of Ghostbusters II when I hear Bobby Brown.

anyone into the dream? i like the songs hes written for rihanna etc a lot but his own album is a bit ropey at times. sort of like the NERD album (though nowhere near as good/interesting and not really the assertion of a real identity like that album, its just a slightly facile/for its own sake vanity project) to his neptunes writing/production dayjob, but the lyrics/weak singing let it down a lot imo. some good grooves/novel structural/arranging touches though.

I'm a big fan of The Dream, although I have to admit it took me a while to fully get into his first album. The leaks from his second record have been okay so far, but I think he's starting to sound a little bit predictable, what with the trademark vocal tics. His work for other artists can be hit and miss, but generally I think he hits the target more often than not, the not being when he works with Mariah and drowns everyone in slush. J Holiday "Bed" and Electrik Red "Drank In My Cup" were probably two of the best songs of last year in my opinion.

This guy's album really needs to drop some time soon.

He was responsible for producing some of Young Jeezy's best, and creepiest beats and he was also the genius behind Sexual Eruption. For his solo debut he appears to be moving into making dreamy space soul that doesn't sound too dissimilar to 808 and Heartbreak, only I like this stuff alot more.
