I quite like the economic side of record collecting. I think it's good hands on lesson in supply, demand and scarcity.
Capitalism in miniature.
Also importantly I reckon it shows us the sheer irrationality of markets and how hard it is to game them.

very nicely put danny. obviously from the capital realist's point-of-view my hoarding records is simply an accumulation of capital - i think that's why i'm at pains to point out that investment never came into it.

If you start buying/selling for investment reasons, you've lost it.

Dante put people that collect rare vinyl and never play them in the 4th circle of hell IIRC.

It's interesting to think that the "real" markets are just like this, only with much more pace, volume and money, and then complexified with fuckeries like options and futures. God knows how anyone ever succeeds. I'm imagine what a futures options scenario would look like with Matt's krautrock collection. "Lend me those Neu LPs, I'll sell them into MVE, buy them back when they drop in price, pocket the difference".

i did have the idea - more like feeble joke - a few years ago of WOECOIN - a digital currency based on my record collection

basically you buy shares in my collection for money and i give you a certificate. no more stupid than most digital currencies!

oh - and the records stay safe with me where i take care of their security... right?

Yep absolutely Matt, it’s not usually a conscious thing but it does lurk about in the background for me.
having uploaded all of them onto discogs - i do now kinda see what you mean! perhaps discogs does focus that aspect?

...though i'm not (yet) relying on it for supplemental income - so reality not bitten there.

turns out i have a rare ariel pink cd!

Hi there, Woebot

I see you've listed CD-rs of Scared Famous and FF>>. COOL! VERY cool in fact! Were you the one who shared "Ff>> tape version" to soulseek?
Anyway, I'm just curious about these CDs! Ariel himself wasn't even sure CDs of these albums existed! How did you come to own them? Do you have any story to tell? I guess I'm just very interested.

All the best
~Sam

pretty sure i bought it here
