Reports on Saturday night claimed the 33-year-old’s €700m release clause no longer applies in the final year of his contract but a statement from the Spanish league’s governing body on Sunday denied that is the case.
“In compliance with the applicable rule, La Liga will not approve a request to be deregistered as a player with the Spanish football federation, unless the amount in the release clause has been paid,” La Liga said in a statement.
So Messi will cost anyone who wants him 700m befor you get into wages and stuff. That definitely puts rather a different complexion on what's gonna happen doesn't it?
Although he didn't turn up for the medical (as stated) so he can't train so.... what?

I get fed up with this kinda partial reporting. BBC are saying

Manchester City are prepared to pay 33-year-old Barcelona and Argentina forward Lionel Messi £450m as part of a five-year plan that would eventually see him join New York City FC.
Does that mean they think they can ignore the 700m or are they putting together a package that is worth over a billion?

If Barcelona won't let him leave for less than 700m and Messi won't play for them then will he spend the end of his career on the bench?

Reading about this guy... great story. Played for Wimbledon apparently, well, he signed, never actually turned out for them either.

I was just coming here to say that. Disappointing really as a neutral. I guess he'll fuck off next year anyway.... unless they can build an amazingly exciting new project by the end of the season.
Edit - I meant about Messi staying, wasn't there a post about it a minute ago?

Anyone watch the England game? I was out for most of the day so I didn't catch it but sounds like they made hard work of it.
I did like this comment on the Guardian.

DeltaMusicTango: Irresponsible by Wanker to get himself sent of like that.
DeltaMusicTango: Sorry, autocorrect error. Should have said "off".

I did watch Portugal completely outclass an uninterested looking Croatia. 4-1 flattered them greatly.... I think Portugal hit the woodwork four or five times.

Shockingly woeful performance- static in the midfield, crossing was abysmal, slow sideways build up. Still haven’t watched a decent Rice performance. Walker has always played with at least one mistake in him. Gomes gave away a silly pen. England really lack a creative midfield presence. The Iceland penalty miss was pretty symptomatic of an utterly forgettable match.

Ah...
I think this tournament is a great idea though. Basically all international games beyond the WC and euros have always been meaningless, this seems to actually have succeeded in creating a tier in-between those.
That said I'm surprised they're playing it this year.
