Barcelona and Real Madrid are finally seeing their chickens coming home to roost after years of buying the most expensive players ant the top of the market... 100m for Hazard, 120m for Griezmann, Bale still drawing 600k a week and hasn't kicked a ball for Madrid in years, more than 100m for Dembele and so on and so forth.... for years people have said it was unsustainable and it would have to unravel at a certain point and at last we see it with Barcelona stuck with no strikers after having had to give away all their best players at a horrendous loss and Real Madrid only able to bid 200m euros for Mbappe.... er, wait a minute, that doesn't seem right, how is that possible? Madrid seemingly do have a magic money tree or are they just cheating like fuck again?
Anyway, it now seems more and more obvious that Barcelona could see all this coming and their ludicrous contention that ESL was necessary to save football is revealed all the more clearly as a shameless attempt to cover their arse and prevent the extent of their mismanagement being revealed.
Now, I've never really cared for Barcelona but now it becomes clear that they spent loads of money they didn't have to create a squad well beyond their means and then were prepared to destroy football as we know it to prevent them suffering the consequences, their moves in favour of the ESL seem particularly scummy. As I read it they use "the good of football" and "the good of FCB" completely interchangeably and they expected everyone else to simply go along with it. As a result of this, I am taking a huge amount of pleasure in the slow motion car crash that has been the start to their season. Actually less like a car crash and more like seeing the Titanic grinding into the iceberg - and I will really enjoy any further disasters that befall them, particularly if they finish out of the top three in La Liga or if they go out in the first round of the CL (with Bayern putting double figures past them in each game). Funniest would be if there was a ESL created a few years down the line but Barcelona were no longer one of the teams selected for it....
The Mbappe thing was always bullshit. They were never going to bid. It was all a performance to show the player they were interested before making a deal in Jan to pick him up on a free next summer

The thing with Barca atm is the architects of what you're talking about, Barto and Rossell, aren't even there anymore. They tanked the club and others have to deal with the fallout.
Of course, but that's the nature of football clubs... any company really, even countries. It's basically like Theseus' Ship or Trigger´s Broom or whatever you prefer, the parts change but you go on supporting - or in this case childishly and petulantly hating - the institution itself. Though of course that doesn't in any way preclude hating the individual parts too and booing them and so on wherever they go - except there is one way for them to be forgiven of their terrible crimes, which is move to your club and score hundreds of goals on the way to lifting the championship. Also they can gain a temporary reprieve at the World Cup and Euros if they happen to come from the right country and they play well.

Although, what particularly gets my goat with Barca is the claim that the ESL was necessary to save football and the mentality that that claim revealed,; namely that Barcelona see Barcelona as synonymous with football and, worse, they think think that everyone else should too.
Was it Bartomeu who made that claim or had he left, I actually can't remember?

Did you see that after his first game for PSG someone asked Messi to swap shirts and he refused? I'm not sure what I think about that, I mean, it's not normal to swap shirts after a normal league game is it? I suppose that i can see that lots of players are gonna want to ask for his shirt and it could get annoying if he doesn't nip it n the bud right now.... but then why not make people happy? Especially cos I read an interview with him when he said something about how he doesn't normally ask for shirts but when he played against Zidane he did.... I thought that was odd as it seemed to show that he recognised and understood the desire that would drive someone to ask for the shirt of an all-time great such as himself or ZZ, yet at the same time as he expected it to be satisfied when he was doing the asking, he saw no contradiction with telling people to fuck off when they wanted his.

Did you guys see that last night

Manchester United’s newest signing struck twice in the dying minutes to give his country victory and prolong his own legend, a pair of majestic headers making him the most prolific scorer in the history of men’s international football.

111 international goals is absolutely ludicrous. He missed a penalty too I think.

Not that exciting but fairly pleased that England have followed on from the Euros with two ruthless 4-0 wins. Lesser opposition of course but over the years seen them make so much unnecessarily hard work of these kinds of ties... away in Hungary that's a decent result and a goal for Saka after the penalty miss and on his birthday. Not much more to say but it's solid. Especially with France and Spain struggling a little.

What happened in Brazil today anyhow? I know police came on the pitch and tried to deport Premiership players, but what was the upshot?

me and craner willl always support teams like madrid and rangers over victim-mentality clubs like barca and celtic.

this is all about Gascoigne, isn't it - you support Spurs, the most self-victimising bag of wank in London, when you should be a Hammer who've won fuck all endlessly too

only time you get to a European final you lost to Scousers, which is atypical Spurs to the core

among 2 of the cities i've called home there are 3 European cups, fucks sake Forest have 2 and even Villa have 1 (@craner is Villa if memory serves)

could freak my brothers out that way, sit down for dinner one evening and unbutton a shirt, just let it manifest in the air for bit like that weird maggot cheese or a flopping rogue bollock, then forced to burn it in a cleansing ritual worth getting pissed up for

Yeah I think Man U are still behind Chelsea, City and probably Liverpool too... despite nicking a valuable win today and Ronaldo scoring at better than one a game.
