Punk Mix Part 1: 'Banned in D.C.' - First Wave American Punk

spooky girlfriend

Wild Horses
Includes tracks from the earliest U.S. punk bands inspired by the D.I.Y youth movement kicked off by the likes of the Sex Pistols and the Damned (who were the first UK punk band to release an album and tour the US)...from unrecognised bands that were ahead way of their time (Crime, Electric Eels, Rocket from the Tombs), to the fervent L.A. hardcore scene (Germs, Circle Jerks, Black Flag), to East Coast 'no-wave' and 'straight edge' (which frowned on alcohol, sex and drug consumption).
Politics, nihilism, desperation, anger, poverty and determination are all captured in these recordings. Many are rare, all were made before punk music was commercially viable or watered down. Hardcore alumni who cut their teeth on the mid-80's underground include Dave Grohl and anybody who later found success in grunge.

Also includes completely inaudible lyrics to relevant songs and erm..this synopsis.

Oh good call! Just in the mood for this, thanks! Sex Bomb is one of the best records ever made. I saw them do it live once for like 15 minutes and I was in hardcore heaven.

if you're into this stuff then these videos are great...

this is amazing footage, it-s mid-80's Black Flag, Greg Ginn kills it. Rollins was into all sorts of music and this stuff is a bit more ambitious, it's post-hardcore really:

and this is what happens when Minor Threat's PA cuts out:

nice indeed, thx.

btw, the new issue of spin magazine is worth checking out (for once) with it's "30th anniversary of punk" theme, if only for the three roundtable interviews with a bunch of old punks from the london, new york and los angeles scenes. the group photos are almost worth the cover price alone, the interviews and recollections of the early days interesting as well. nothing you haven't heard before if you've read "please kill me" but fun nonetheless.

That Black Flag footage is great, been listening to their 'My War' album alot recently with all the ultra-slow sludgy stuff on side two. Big influence on Earth, Melvins, Sunn 0))) etc. Even better than 'Damaged' IMHO

Absolutely, and if you're talking about the B side of My War, you've got to mention EYEHATEGOD.

OMG!!!!!!!!!!

thank you so much!

siege are one of those legendary bands in boston that you heard so much about but could never find any traces...

The videos are all from Siege's legendary cable access show. I have been hunting for a download of "Dropdead" for you but can't seem to find it anywhere. I'll post it if it turns up.
