Storm Chasing

This guy, Mike Hollingshead, was featured in one of the Sunday supplements. I've been into tornado chasing after watching the Kuchar Brothers films on acid (a la John Waters) but this guy's photos are just next level apocaplypse stuff. All the better for the interview with him where he comes off as supra-normal - ( cue Nebraska accent )
"I always eat my breakfast in the car, sometimes a Rice Krispie bar and a can of Pepsi. I get pretty hungry. If I see a Burger King, I'll stop there, but I might end up with a sandwich and a packet of Pringles".

I don't know why but this quote just made me laugh hysterically.

I am terrified of tornados, used to have night terrors about them as a kid, epic nightmares where I'd wake up screaming and covered in sweat, until one night when we had a serious of 5 or 6 of them touch down in my town after a microburst of jet stream started a huuge storm system!!

Sometimes I wonder if I'm a psychic ;)

poltergeist has not been dismissed by all neurologists, psychiatrists, and physicists as an entirely made up phenonmenon. many attribute its occurence to extreme fluctuations of psychic energy of the people present, predominantly, as it turns out, troubled, sharp, emotionally intense and unstable little girls. like nomad. :D

Lol. I'm going all pagan in my old age and getting totally into the destructive powers of nature.

I spilt a glass once, perfectly separating a 1 cm ring from its top, with just my mind. I was fantastically, fantastically angry.

seeing this final scene out of context of the 4 hour film that precedes it is criminal i realize. as in its proper sequence it is hair raising... but still.

I think I would give almost literally anything to see tornadoes in real life. They're actually one of the most common things for me to dream about.

they sound like freight trains, they're utterly horrifying

Tarkovsky, well, he can never be surpassed, but what's this doing in a thread about pringles-eating tornado chasers? And Poltergeists?

WE are the (anorganic) poltergeists:

I bought this guy's video, it's one of the most insane and the most beautiful pieces of video art I've seen in a long time, it's all hand-held with him chasing tornadoes, then getting too close and having to drive away fast, some of the footage is breathtaking, you simply don't get that vast expanse of land to see in the UK in the same way. It's all the better for him not making it like video art, you just have him and sometimes his commentary. Alot of the time it's queasy making, as he's obviously driving and holding the camera at the same time to try and capture the weather, it's an obsessive at work, great stuff.

Can you imagine him finally getting a bit too close though, and being sucked away into oblivion, and then his last tape somehow being found? Kind of like an extreme-weather Grizzly Man. :)

hehe not Herzog ;)

Yeah it's one of the great things about it - at some points he's literally inside the tornado; stuff swirling around him, and he's going 'oh heck. oh heck. oh heck. I gotta get out of here. Too close!' and we're watching it screaming at the screen 'YOU"RE FUCKING INSANE!!'. Very funny.

Hahahahaha, I love the idea that someone could be in a situation as perilous as being inside a tornado and still not come out with any language stronger than 'heck'. :D

Ah, lovely. That's the image used in the widespread "Australian regrets walking to the store" meme.
