UK Funky RIP

I was just thinking this earlier. It's definitely reached the end point now and has been like this for a while. It was superb whilst it lasted though and will be sorely missed. At least there's still Funkystepz and Jackin' holding my interest, no need to give up hope just yet.

Yeah, it reached this point maybe a year ago...I still enjoy playing it in clubs tho...just hope there will be a revival at some point as funky never really reached its potential...remained more of a nerd community than fully working scene...

Which producers are likely to stand out in the house bandwagon now? I heard some new Mad One bits which sounded incredible...even tho I feel a bit ambivalent about the whole tech/minimal house, his talent is just immense...such a shame he's a mad one and maybe 3-4 djs will ever get to play these tracks lol...

Naughty is another one to watch imho, Im really feeling that jackin tune he posted on soundcloud recently

Does anyone know the name of the Funk Butcher track with the vocal and the sick kick drum pattern? It's played quite early on in the most recent Marcus Nasty rinse show.

New Funkystepz EP
I saw Prosumer this weekend, he played like 30 minutes of UK Funky at the end of a 3.5 hour set, was incredibly fun.

Re. the death of UK Funky, isn't it fair to say that rather than die funky has mutated to become something else? The fertile 130 BPM stuff that Blackdown has been championing throughout 2012 draws pretty heavily from it. Obviously you've got Beneath leading the way, but people like Visionist, Epoch and Wen in there too, along with older heads like Grievous Angel, Altered Natives, and of course Dusk + Blackdown themselves. Many of the best moments on Dasalfex (the title track, 'Wicked Vibez,' 'We Ain't Beggin' etc) are in a kind of "dark funky" vibe, and LV are probably worth mentioning too here for 'Sebenza,' as well as the influence of Cooly G, particularly in her Dub Organizer releases.

Maybe this is a little premature, but aren't we on the verge of another 'wot do you call it?' moment? The new 130 stuff isn't really funky, nor is it strictly dubstep or grime, but there does seem to be a distinct mood/vibe being shared between many of these producers, namely, a weird, kind of menacing post-euphoric dread. I've been lurking on these boards for a little while now and I'm a bit surprised there hasn't been more discussion of the development of this sound. That Blackdown show with Wen, Visionist and Beneath all in the mix feels like a bit of a watershed moment.

Is there a working download link for the Blackdown v Beneath v Wen v Visionist show? The link on Rinse is down...

I mean, almost from the beginning of the funky thread there have been people on here (dubstep fans) wanting darkside funky, complaining about the cheesiness and the plasticy production etc.

i like those tracks on the links but most of those tracks would fall more under the post dubstep/post-whatever kind of stuff than post-funky imo... that first illusion track is more or less old dubstep but with more of a funky rhythm behind it. makes me think of shotz too.

it would prob seem like more of a watershed moment to me if it felt a bit newer.

edit - i see benny beat me to it. yeah, this stuff is basically the kind of thing that seems like it was dreamed up in a 'dark nuum music' lab. i like it cos it hits the right buttons for me and i think its done well but you know these guys had quite a specific sound they were trying to achieve. its def a keysound/blackdown sound.

I recognise none of the things that first drew me to uk funky in any of those tracks, rhythmically they feel quite stale. It's all a little too well thought out and boring. Finding the token Grime MC samples really flaccid as well, especially on top of the 'grime you could take to meet ya nan' aesthetic.

theres a track on the new bambouno album on 50 weapons that does something interesting with funky. not revolutionary, but interesting. keeps the more playful vibe of old funky in there more than these tracks while still being 'progressive'.
