Re. the death of UK Funky, isn't it fair to say that rather than die funky has mutated to become something else? The fertile 130 BPM stuff that Blackdown has been championing throughout 2012 draws pretty heavily from it. Obviously you've got Beneath leading the way, but people like Visionist, Epoch and Wen in there too, along with older heads like Grievous Angel, Altered Natives, and of course Dusk + Blackdown themselves. Many of the best moments on Dasalfex (the title track, 'Wicked Vibez,' 'We Ain't Beggin' etc) are in a kind of "dark funky" vibe, and LV are probably worth mentioning too here for 'Sebenza,' as well as the influence of Cooly G, particularly in her Dub Organizer releases.
Maybe this is a little premature, but aren't we on the verge of another 'wot do you call it?' moment? The new 130 stuff isn't really funky, nor is it strictly dubstep or grime, but there does seem to be a distinct mood/vibe being shared between many of these producers, namely, a weird, kind of menacing post-euphoric dread. I've been lurking on these boards for a little while now and I'm a bit surprised there hasn't been more discussion of the development of this sound. That Blackdown show with Wen, Visionist and Beneath all in the mix feels like a bit of a watershed moment.
