I'm really struggling to find a mix/rinse podcast that's playing the darker, more UK end of this that everyone is saying exists. any help?

try waiting a year until the self-fulfilling prophecy that runs 'don't worry, this stuff will get more edgy, more urban, and less boring' actually manages to fulfil itself? ;)

This Circle set is quite fun, goes dark n tracky in the mid section ("underground") but I'm still finding the scene's enthusiasm more exciting than the music itself.

Is that related to the one that says "don't bother listening to grime / dubstep / dnb - not much of it's that interesting anymore and the stuff that is good gets ignored"?

Bar a few tracks I'm beginning to think this is the case. I like the idea behind it really but I'm only feeling very small portions of this right now. A lot of it just sounds like old house.
I hope this isn't just wishing for the next thing when it doesn't exist, that's just weird.

interesting stuff about rapid making funky on the sly in blackdown's (top notch) new pitchfork column.. what i wanna know is how long before the column name is changed to 'the month in grime and dubstep and funky' ?? ;)

thats very jokes

looking forward to checking this set

i wonder how some of these raves would respond to the stuff that D1 or Anti-Social are making at the moment

yeah i agree.. D1's latest release on tempa is pure funky house with a big fat bassline underneath.. lovely! headhunter has a similar track on his double pack.. i'm sure they'd go down a treat at a funky house rave.

I think similarly Dave Q was excited to expose his sound to the (fairly conservative) NY house lot when he played at Dub War...

Tbh, it sometimes seems like when people describe what funky house might be going to turn into if we're lucky, they're actually describing something a lot closer to Mala, D1 or Kode 9 than to how most funky sounds at the moment...

bang, there it is: part four of this mix has funky going raw!

"Come in Mr Grimey synth, we've been expecting you...".

You can also hear some swung garage-y hi hats on another track too, which is very good to hear.

Yeah - part 4 has some interesting stuff.

There's a track that drops around 20mins in that reminds me of this Karizma track:

Anyone know what it is / who did it?

Footloose plays it on 1Xtra every week. It's either MC or DJ Creeper - Unknown Dub. He plays an MC version of it, which when added to the beat sounds like old So Solid. It's pretty interesting in a real basic way. I love the fact the track really makes you wait for the bass line, and there's a real impact when it hits. The instrumental is also on that Supa D NYE mix.

This is early days. There's really only drips and drabs of UK production coming out. The more commercial stuff by Crazy Couzins, MA1, DJ NG etc probably won't go down very well with those looking for real ultra dark house. But the great thing about funky is the fact that people can RAVE again! You can't really rave to grime or dubstep in the same way, I wouldn't classify them as dancing music.

There are some naughty, druggy, tracky sub bass tracks that have the house swing and vibe, but retain enough of that UK edge to distance them from US house or euro minimal. I've heard a fair amount of anonymous sparse and raw sounding tracks on various pirates for the last few months, and it's great to have a mix of these with the vocal bits.

Check the track 'Buss It' on Supa D's page - the bassline is pure eski.

Obviously it isn't fully there yet - there aren't enough original bits coming out yet, a lot of mixes are filled with existing house styles, but then again UKG was like that in 94/95 too. Personally the last thing I'm trying to do is actively search for the next big thing; I've just heard loads of tracks that I love dancing to, and they're all these UK funky things. I know I've got the bug because everytime I go to clubs right now I'm disappointed - all I wanna hear is that funky beat!

I don't care how cheesy the vocals are, Crazy Cousinz' 'Bongo Jam' is great. The DJ Naughty remix is really good too.
