My Fellow Americans - Blogging The Primaries, Take 2

My first attempt to do a little shameless self-promo ended in tears before bedtime from a certain now-banned Dissensus poster; indeed the thread had to be frozen before my election roadtrip had even begun. If you want to know how it got locked you can find out here:

http://dissensus.com/showthread.php?t=7039

For everyone that wanted to do more than argue the socio-linguistic connotations of the word 'slut' (which was very interesting, though maybe a mite off-topic), I'm making a second attempt to start a promo thread, as I hope this first-hand, completely self-funded way of covering the election and meeting the American people will be of interest to some Dissensians:

www.myfellowamericans2008.com

And here's a little piece I knocked up for the New Statesman on blogging the primaries too:

Thanks! :D

Cheers Mos - and best on take 2.
Hmmm, events have already kind of er,
shall we say passed by wot the previous Diss pundits were on about on the 'frozen' take.
Yes, the name is Obama folks ...
Hillary's seen only in rear view anyway by now - and it's not a good look for her .
Sounds like Bill's sputtering to sleepy crowds in NH now too ...

And being we now have candidate being called 'post racial' ,
let's just let things flow and see what ends up ...
Cheers from Tokyo !

Mick Huckabee, who won last week's vote, was scheduled to sample a "Huckaburger" in Concord before moving on to appear at a "chilifest" in Rochester, alongside his celebrity supporter Chuck Norris.

The Reps have Chuck Norris on their side?!? Then we are doomed!

Dan - loving the blog and thought I was making sense of it all until I found out there was a difference between a caucus and a primary (!) but it's crazy mad to see people so enthused about a democratic process. I just can't imagine seeing the same over here.

Are you two using US mobile phones over there? It would be great if you were updating via Twitter as well. I was using that a lot to follow the results. Unfortunately Twitter is still really only big in the US, we seem to take longer to catch on over here.

Article about Twitter's role in relaying results: http://www.techpresident.com/blog/entry/18188/iowa_twitter_success

Normally if stuff is breaking Twitter gets the traffic first. Anyways, good luck, have fun and thanks.

PS - Where's my hard drive!! (j/k -catch up when you are back)

UPDATE: I just got emailed about this: http://politweets.com/

Description via Mashable.com: Politweets is a pretty simple site – to the left, the most recent public Tweets about Democratic candidates; to the right, the conversation about the Republicans. In the middle, candidates are stacked top to bottom based on how much each candidate is being talked about.

hey guys - no, no twitter or us mobiles alas. we are going to set up a youtube channel though, as we've got all this video we don't know what to do with. we wanted to keep the site itself plainly words and illu's though - hence no photos, embedded games, fancy interactive stuff and so on.

(and omg mark your hard-drive, i know! so sorry! it got to like xmas day and i suddenly realised i had no way of hooking up with you or mel or anyone else we know to hand over your hard-drive. it will be extra specially packed with stuff when i get it to you in a few weeks, i promise!!)

we are now in boston. it's hella nice. and there's no-one campaigning here, which is a RELIEF. ha.

didn't make it alas, time in boston was too short by far.. thanks though! since then we've been through nyc, philly, baltimore (which did actually look like the wire in places..), dc (which made me mad), north carolina (where we stayed with a vampire), south carolina (where we failed to meet a single republican), and now in florida, which has been lovely. going to see john mccain tmw morning.

one question: we won't get killed in new orleans, right? my mate went there in summer of 06 and met like three people who'd been recently mugged at gunpoint. obviously i am neither (a) paranoid or (b) stupid. and unlike our home secretary, i am confident/streetwise enough to spend significant portions of my life wandering around peckham at 3am. but some reassurance would be nice. my guidebook just says 'stick to the french quarter and you probably should be safe' - not mad keen on the word 'probably' in that sentence.

Farewell Dan.

You are about to die.

No-one gets out of New Orleans alive.

Unless the vampire you stayed with had a crafty nibble you weren't aware of. (It's the vampire capital of the US apparently.)

You might also check out some of the local voudou action.

We get Blue Monday and Tricky Tuesday this week but upcoming in the US: Super Tuesday#

http://google-latlong.blogspot.com/2008/01/super-tuesday-super-map.html
Super Tuesday (February 5) is another important stage of the 2008 political season, as residents of 24 states help nominate each party's presidential candidates. Google Maps closely followed the caucus results from Iowa and primary results from New Hampshire, but we decided to do something a little bit different in honor of Super Tuesday: YouTube is implementing a Google Map to create the Super Tuesday YouTube Channel.

Anyone -- from candidates and voters to members of media -- can upload videos to YouTube and geotag them so they can be tracked and viewed on a Google Map that resides in the Super Tuesday channel. There will be unique markers for voters, Democratic campaigns, Republican campaigns, and news outlets so that viewers can easily determine the source of the video. The site will feature a wide range of content, from predictions and interviews to personal reflections. To check out the videos, head over to the channel, then zoom in on your state or hometown to see what's been uploaded in your area. We hope this will be your go-to spot for all videos leading up to this important day.

we're now in houston, tx. two or three new blog posts going up in the next few hours, watch this space.

kinda chuffed to see obama win sc, just cos it keeps the dem race interesting. hillary's sense of smug entitlement was just getting too much.

we were only there for one night, d'oh! spent some time in austin, now we're already heading towards arizona, west on the i-10 - we have to get to california comfortably ahead of super tuesday alas.

austin was great, predictably. we really liked houston as well, as it goes. had some kick ass crepes on gray street (i think) for breakfast, before hitting the road again. went out in the downtown on sat night, amused to see cops on horseback, people in bars wearing stetsons etc. didn't see yr msg in time alas... we ended up just having a few beers in a bistro-y french place, too knackered for anything more serious.

now we're in fort stockton, wherever the hell that is. motel stop-over business...

fanks. -dan (in the east bay for another day or two)
