history is made at night
Is it time to reclaim Level 42? They were actually fairly sound, supported Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament in the midst of the Thatcherite 80s. Mark King's fashion sense might have been a bit Miami Vice but his bass playing was very very funky, when I was in the anarcho-punk scene some of my friends (admittedly bass players) really started gettting into him, so you'd be round somebody's house listening to Crass and Psychic TV then suddenly someone would put on Level 42. Admittedly we were living in Luton Casual Central so some of that soulboy vibe must have rubbed off on all of us. Running in the Family still brings a tear to my eye.

Is it time to reclaim Level 42?

No, no, a thousand times no, it will never, ever be time to reclaim Level 42! You'll have to step over my self-immolating corpse to get to them!

Weirdly they've been on the radio fucking everywhere I've gone recently...B&Q, Asda, Mark bloody King following me around like a black eyed dog, that slap bass sound will be the final toll of the bell, you mark my words.

theres a level 42 edit doing the rounds at the moment, it might be todd terje? i spent most of the mid nineties learning to play slap bass for some reason, was a proper little thunder thumbs. Tried it recently and looked like a tit

Er, forgive the pedantic (?) streak emerging, but a lot of those aren't really Jazz Funk. Great tunes that 'Funky Nassau' and 'Hercules' are. Does it matter? probably not. ;)

Everytime I'm on an airplane I listen to level 42's entire discography, from 1981-1987 while playing sudoku. Don't know why.
