I'm over techno and hiphop

too punk to drunk
Yep. Finished. Kaput. I don't spend my drachmas on any product anymore..

It's all BORING. They're milked the well dry. Mauritz Von Oswald just puts out obsucre reggae/dub instead of making new tracks, the Detroit dudes just make the same stuff, house is going absolutely no-where, and all that dubstep=twostep-three step guff is just the Aphex Twin meets drum and bass but on downers. Even BURIAL are bloody boring, sounding like Tricky meets MBV..

I saw MOODYMANN for the first time here in Melbourne, and sure he played some nice housey stuff (nothing mndblowing), but the biggest highlight was when he dropped in the DOORS 'riders on the storm'!!!!

..hiphop is a joke.. The bling is making shit, Kayne is just Daft Punk with a black singer, and don't start me with 'whitey hiphop' especially the execrable 'Aussie hiphop'...

I mean I got the fantastic HARMONIA LIVE reissue, and it sound deeper, trippier and more tecchy than the weirdest most underground marxist music you cats throw forward as 'new, hip, radical'. I'm not being defeatest, I live in hope that some new techno/hiphop form will light my fire, so I rely on you EXPERTS! :)

I understand the regulars on this board pride themselves on PROVING PEOPLE WRONG and winning arguments with facts etc..etc, especially when it comes to politics and other stuff, but COME ON! PROVE ME WRONG ABOUT TECHNO & HIPHOP right now...BRING THE FACTS MUFFUCKERS!!!!

I really wanna lose this particular argument! LOL!

But nope as one old man once said - IT'S NOT MUSIC IT'S JUST a BEAT..and the beat has gone as far as it can go

its arguable that house is going nowhere... but imo theres almost always a good range of fresh stuff about. new tracks i've picked up in the past couple of weeks:

armand van helden - je t'aime - switch remix (madness!)
margot - pleasure - butch remix
kasper bjorke - doesn't matter - kasper bjorke remix
atfc - mothership - bart b more remix
inner city - big fun - smd remix
murk - reach for me - paul woolford remixes
workidz - washmachine

it's not particularly new but my fave vibe is still moody gothno stuff like miss kitten's new album batbox or the margot track above. i simply like it. disappointment is inevitable if you're listening to stuff solely for the sake of new-ness... movements run out of steam, you can absorb things faster than they progress, or you become attuned to one area of change and fail to notice others.

Considering all of the exciting things that are in the works and all of the promising artists that no longer depend on/count on getting signed to a major label and will just make interesting music for years and years to come I don't feel the need to change your mind at all. I'll just enjoy it all myself and be selfish. Why should I waste my breath to convince you that great music is still out there? We both have access to the vast universe that is the internet and I'm sure you're familiar with the Google bar and search engines. You've convinced YOURSELF that everything suck so you're absolutely right. There's NOTHING out there worth listening to.

i think there certainly is something bigger going on here.

Buick's feelings are reflective of real cultural currents:

a real bankruptcy of ideas in these styles of North American and European urban music.

of course there are exceptions. dope underground hyphie joints that still have not seen the light of day. "techno" artists in europe that still continue to amaze - Pan Sonic, Pomassl, etc. but on the whole, the vast majority of output in these scenes are derivative and unacceptably deficient.

for me African hiphop and African Techno is ABSOLUTELY where it's at. bustling with ideas, and just plain finger lickin' good. in case you didn't see this Buick.

need to give it a lot more thought and proper attention, but off the top the reasons for this are:

• a wealth of musical heritage deeper than any ocean, ready for 21st century update.

• an openness of exchange with other currents and traditions: to use only 2 East African examples: Taraab hybridizing Arabic and Indian music, and Bongo Flava using Reggaeton beat patterns.

• a raw, do-it-with-what-you-got production ethic reminiscent of old-skool hip hop and early house. producers NOT boggled down and lost in endless studio trickery, but rather delivering the ideas in their heads with unadulterated energy, urgency, and a lack of self consciousness which results in effortless perfection.

• an experimental attitude also like early hiphop and house where nothing is defined and anything goes. so you get loads of wicked, uncategorizable tunes that use unconventional sounds and patterns in ways that have not been done before.

I'm pretty much done with noodly, serious, 'conceptual' techno these days too. I'm listening to a lot of old acid, disco, and breakcore. Anything with a bit of stupid energy.

sometimes
i've got hopes for a kind of messy resurgence of ravey techno and slightly mashed up stuff this year.
i'm really enjoying stuff like the new loungin collective, ikonika, new james cotton. Primary colour weird stuff that looks back into dances past but rejuvenates it through it's own playfulness. i'm less and less interested in genres nowdays.

Point me in the direction of this African techno of which you speak?

Agreed

Never been one for Techno (with exceptions, of course), but House music still rocks my world on a regular basis.

I spoke to Techno today, she said you were packed anyway and Hip/Hop was to busy doing a deal with some French designer to get back to me....;)

IMO: if you're getting bored of music, just take a break for a while.
Most of the times I'm bored with music it's been from over-exposure, and
not simply that there is no good music.
