mash dem down Smokey Joe remix.

fookin killer that one, the original mix too. I was watching some old rave documentary the other day & I did a doubletake when they did an interview w/the Brodie brothers & it turned out they were white. with ponytails even! tho I guess Danny Breaks had one back then too & he's pretty much infallible so hey...

here it is, a couple minutes in, also there's a great bit with their hippie mum going on about how lovely it all is...

Some of the best ragga jungle in 4 handy eps.

oh yeah I didn't mean you can't find reasonably priced stuff & where the $ actually goes to the producers - especially if it was released on a fairly large label etc. it just seems like, unfortunately, the douchebag record collector culture is really really strong w/regards to ultra-obscure dodgy ragga jungle one-off 12"s & such.

dude.

do you mean Remarc's own remix (which is on that straight up Remarc amen rinseout tip) or the more famous DJ Hype Remix which has that rubbery bass & is more on some proto-hardstep (or proto-jump up) Ganja Kru ting? they're both friggin' great of course. either way.

a lot of these tunes have probably been mentioned upthread but just running thru the ragga jungle playlist on the mp3 player (cos half these records cost a million dollars, tho some are available fairly cheap on comps/RE/etc):

Bagga Worries & Jooxie Nice - Legalize
Brainkillers & Schwarzenegger - Soul Pill Remix (on the Kemet Crew LP)
Chris Jay - Junglist Soldier
DJ Hype - Bad Man
DJ Mowgly (Alec Empire) - Take a Pull Pon Me Spliff
Krome & Time - Ganja Man/Studio One Lik
Leviticus - Burial
Mr. Realistic - If a Sound Test
Prizna ft. Demolition Man - Fire
Red Light - everything really
Remarc - Unity ft. Simpleton, also his remix of Fire
Rude Bwoy Monty - Out In Da Street
Splash - Babylon
Studio One - To the Rescue
Top Cat - Ruffest Gunark (DJ Rap Remix)
X Men - Tearin (Informer)/Sweet
also - lots of Kemet Crew stuff, Congo Natty (tho a lot of his stuff is more jump-upish), M-Beat, etc. plus of the neo-ragga guys some Soundmurderer & SK-1 tunes, also Krinjah's done some good stuff
loads of ragga jungle refixes - Under Mi Sensi, Here I Come (G-Funk Remix), 6 Million Ways to Die, DJ SS' mix of Limb By Limb, tons & tons others

yeah i was talking about the Hype remix.. i mean, fucking hell, i know relatively fuck all about jungle / drum & bass.. but that tune.. oh my days.

shame so much ragga jungle stuff is so pricey.

any recommendations for mixes??

You need to check out the Hype remixes of 'Touch my Toes' and 'Ganjaman'. Also Hype + Flex 'Do or die' and of course Ganja 1-8 when they were still a bit ragga.

as far as ragga jungle mixes go - & it's definitely been mentioned upthread - Soundmurderer's Wired For Sound Mix is pretty much definitive. especially discs 1 & 2, disc 3 is also great but more on some avant jungle-not-jungle tip (i.e. Plug).

also, more in line w/the Hype remix:

Uncle 22 & Navigator - 6 Million Ways to Die (DJ Hype Remix)
The Dream Team (Bizzy B) - Stamina/Warriors
Johnny Jungle - Killa Sound (Remixes - Pascal/Krome & Time)
Krome & Time ca. '94-95 - esp The License/Ruffneck Scouts, Brok Out
Ellis Dee - Big Up Your Chest/Junglist Warrior
New Blood - Worries In the Dance
definitely the Ganja Records stuff as Droid said - also the STILL SMOKIN compilation LP which was the definitive comp for that whole sound the way Torque was for techstep
Congo Natty ca. '95-98, especially the Tribe of Issachar stuff - Junglist, Wardance

& Droid will probably disagree with me but a lot of the Kemet Crew stuff is ace

was surprised to hear kode9 play an hour of jungle to close off his set in tokyo last night

thing that struck me was how (for lack of a better word) confident it sounds compared to a lot of dubstep / funky stuff he played.

A little OT but I'm curious, did this one get any love/play in the UK?

Mystical Influence 'Dub Plate Pressure'

It was anthemic in Toronto. Continued getting regular represses well into the 00s as far as I know.

I'm not sure I can add many tunes to the stacks already mentioned, but I did LOVE ragga jungle at the time. It was kinda as if it had been wanting to happen for ages...I remember Ragga Twins "Spliffhead" & some of the more breakbeaty tracks that ended up on the second Rebel MC album sticking out like sore thumbs in 1990. Select mag even had a little go at starting a scene around that stuff & Stevie Hyper D's "Tekno Ragga" (with Apollo 440, I think, from memory?). Of course, it was much slower, but there was a similar vibe, I think. Then I kinda lost interest with the breakbeats c/o all the cheesy stuff & largely missed the period of darkness that later got sainted but which was pretty much loathed outside that scene at the time. When ragga jungle burst in in 94, it seemed beautifully upful & utterly insane & I personally still have zero problem with the likes of M Beat's "Incredible" & Shy FX's "Sound of the Police" (I suppose not strictly a ragga one). The tunes weren't the easiest to find on 12" even then though....

Like most niche genres, it ran its course I guess, but its nice to see it getting recognition again. I don't think the beats are always as interesting now, but some of the post-millennial tunes are pretty smart still - I liked a couple of those Crunk Vinyl ones for instance.

I had a bit of an eBay session a few years ago - grabbing every classic jungle CD compilation I could whilst Jungle was unloved and unwanted. Picked up all the Breakdown/Sub Base/Street Tuff/Desert Storm/Labello/Congo Natty compilations for next to nothing. Been ripping them all to FLAC ready to do some kind of ultimate jungle mix ala Soundmurderer. Narrowing down a tracklist is proving tricky.

This Is It
What took me too long to realize was that the tapes that introduced me to jungle weren't at all like the london scene which was new dub after new dub b/w whatever was hot in the shops.

everything I got in 95 and 96 was like a mash of everything that worked together in the mix from 93 - 96, because everything was new to houston djs at the time.
wish i had those old mixes. what a mad era. raving to jungle at night and dj screw on the radio coming home.

This was the tape that made me realize i didnt know shit about ragga jungle.

actually what i really want are links to good ragga jungle mixes.. i've picked up most of the cd comps.

ive a related question for some of dissensus' old school junglists - what were some of the best/biggest jungle pirates? kool was obv the biggest, but who was their competition? just wondering as i wanna DL some old mixes from goldenerajungle etc.

but really there was no competition.
kool owned jungle in that era. reynolds will always fly the flag for don fm but more for sentimental reasons than actual quality. shabba d started on rush. yankee was another very good mc on the station. pulse 90.6 was the station i started out with but it was more a hardcore thing. nicky blackmarket had a very good show on the station. he would make bird noises into the mic and claim there was a canary loose in the studio. that kind of thing.

excellent. wasnt face big as well? i was reading some old write ups about them being one of the first to make the jump from being a pirate to the net in the late 90s.

quite possibly. remember pirate signals dont always cover all of london. so there may be stations in other parts of london that i never even heard of, and they may even have been excellent. face i dont recall. chilling fm i remember, didn't often listen though.

forgot about that, but yeah, youre right. cant find much from face though on either goldenerajungle or the junglepreserve though so maybe it wasnt a big one.
