exercise?!?!

doing weights isn't that much use really though its good if you want to look really big as weights kinda sort out all the muscles that look good.

Hehehe, thought id contribute to this one. I like gym, squash, walking and mountain biking. Serious outdoor walking in decent places is exercise. The right gear makes it very enjoyable. Mountain biking is a passion for me but its like walking in that you really need to go somewhere good for it. Its expensive in some ways too.... I like going to the gym, i like dips and stuff. Squash is strenuous but a total giggle.

Im off to the gym later - the whole thing is good. 20 mins cycle - hour and a bit at gym on weights, no running due to knee niggles, then a 20 min cycle back:D -

Tea - is that a ref?? IM too tired to rape by that point..

Except your legs. Refer to men with massive upper bodies and spindly little legs. Like Spongebob Squarepants.

I have started at the gym, because I'm sick of being such a little scrawn. Sort of feel like a sell-out, though. I've caved in to body fascism!

If there was such an exercise I could do to make me taller, I'd hammer that, though. I'd love to be six foot on the dot rather than five seven. Being a short guy is like being an obese girl with no breasts.

I wish I was a little bit taller, I wish I was a baller, I wish I had a girl who looked good I would call her

There's loads of leg-specific exercises you can do though that would avoid this. Anyway, my main motivation (other than some very vague notion about general healthiness) is to be able to fool someone who didn't know better that I hadn't spent most of the last six years sitting in front of a computer, taking drugs or asleep. Not really a great look, especially in a bloke. Also I want IdleRich to introduce me to the pleasures/pains of the squash court at some point, which I gather is the kind of sport where it's better to be fit to start with, rather than try to get fit by playing the sport.

You - the 'raping stray dogs' thing isn't a reference, it was just the first thing that sprang to mind when someone mentioned demented twats or whatever the phrase was.

I'm thinking about taking up boxing. Anyone have any experience with this? Is it hard to start later (I'm 22, it seems people start boxing in their teens)? I'm not talking about no asian styles of boxing neither, I'm talking the Don King kind.

I did a bit of boxing in my teens (was never any good though). Go for it. There's no reason you can't do it just to keep fit. You're no way too old unless you want to seriously fight. It's a steep learning curve though - I went to a boxing class at an MMA gym last year which was horrendously embarrassing as I sucked so badly. But that's the way it goes, and you've just got to battle through it and then you start getting good (or just less confused and embarrassed).

Tea - I think your kinda of right about squash - its very very strenuous and more explosive than most cardio type stuff - running or cycling would be a good way to get fit in combination with resistance weights or whatever - the cardio would get your system fitter so you will be stronger with every visit to the gym... - Try to work on core stability - you dont want to go to the gym, gain muscles then pull your back in a serve due to naff core stability. - In fact squash is hard on the body. Being in shape, agile and flexible before you start is a good idea. I never pull muscles snowboarding, or cycling or at the gym, but squash messes me up - pull shit I didnt know I had.

Im shit at squash though, I keep trying to do the "off back wall lob shot" cant do it yet....

- please insert a picture of john candy as freddie bauer playing squash here - google is hopeless

oh man now this thread of my own making is a source of embarrassment... what can i say, steady girlfriend, no constantly occupied with looking good, home cooking, cold weather... have gotten really comfortable and complacent in the past 5 months or so, and my lovehandles show it  gonna get back on it right away

Looks as though we're going up to three games of squash a week. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday lunchtimes. My opponent has the bit between his teeth now, after 37 games the score is 17 each with three ties but two weeks ago I was four ahead. Need to raise my game this week.
I've got to say though that I do it because it's fun rather than to get fit as such. That's an added bonus but I can't imagine regularly doing something that I don't enjoy simply to get fit. I reckon the best thing is to find a sport that you really like and look forward to playing and then you will find yourself getting fit almost inadvertently.

I am aching, starving hungry and tense all the time from the gym stuff.

But for the first time in ages I feel like I'm really achieving something concrete.

on account
i do yoga then silat (indonesian martial art) once a week, the yoga is basically a warm up for the silat which can be gruelling sometimes, esp with the circuit training, my right foot is a mess at the moment, from a bad takedown...

MMS, what kindof silat are you doing? I did Harimau for ages ... really great stuff. Miss it like crazy but hard as hell on the knees & that jungle stuff can savagerize your brain if you let it.

joined a 6aside team. got this horrible feeling i wont be able to walk in the morning.

Youll be alright in the morning. Just wait till the second morning. I started last year and seriously I couldnt even walk/laugh/cough. Took me about three games for the post match pain to ease.

Oh I also read somewhere on the BBC site that warming up is a myth, I see if I can the link and psot later. . .

My friend (who is a very serious runner) was saying something along similar lines. Or at least, that a gentle warm-up such as walking to the place where you play is enough. I think that everyone is quite different though, when I play I am never at full speed until a few minutes into the game and I'm sure that there must be something that I can do to time it so that that peak is reached with kick off.

putting on muscle is bollocks unless you want to spend the rest of your life trying to keep it. i spend my late teens and early twenties as a builders labourer and put on about a stone of muscle, felt all strong and that and then after 3 weeks working in a coffee shop i was back to my fighting weight again ( 9 and a half stone). whats the point....
i'd never enter a gym in a thousand million years.
mind you most people probably have bodies that are more muscle prone than mine i spose.

I used to do football and atheltics when I was younger and always found stretching after strenuous exercise is the best way of avoiding soreness the next day.

Damn, got beat again... 5-1, it's always close on every point and every game but it's like he's always got something in reserve to win the crucial points. I've got to break his psychological advantage.

I think your right about a pyschological advantage having a big impact in squash. One friend i play against can always pull back a 5 point deficit to win in a deciding match, even though im sure we're not that far apart in ability (hes probs a bit fitter).
I always try to convince mysefl ill win (and visualise - no really lol) but always get done over; so frustrating!
