I love these guys. They rock.

Anyone related to a Shriner, or a Shriner themselves?

Can anyone tell me what the little cars are all about?

Anyway, as far as oddball societies go, they beat the shit out of the regular Masons.

they do the bulk of their work "for kids". the cars are legendary especially after appearing on dead kennedys record covers etc. anyway, for me, they rock the houses. i believe they are prominent local figures and businessmen etc, like the round table but with way cooler transport.

Our Shriners of North America mascot, Fez Head Fred, made his debut in late-2002, and has been bringing joy to children in our Shriners Hospitals for Children and in local communities ever since. He is a man-sized fez, complete with a 4-foot tassel and friendly smile. Fez Head Fred has been featured in parades, shows, hospital visits and other appearances. Future plans for Fez Head Fred include the development of stuffed animals, toys, coloring books, and much more.

Wow. Most of the kids I know would run a mile if confronted by a man-sized fez, complete with a 4-foot tassel, no matter how friendly the smile was.

I guess since a forefront motto of Shriners/Masons is to serve Mankind (in your own specific way) to your utmost and humility is the first step, then that's the answer for old men looking ridiculous in clown vehicles. It's been said that Shriner is the hardest level of Masonry to be accepted to, that being said by local Mason friends, Scottish Rite being likened to chewing bubblegum.

My grandfather was a Shriner in Texas.. He played trombone in a Shriner dixieland jazz band and traveled all over the world to play at conventions.. I used to p lay with the stickers he put on his luggage, which had a scimitar and a fez on them. He did have his own fez as well.

He died when I was pretty seven. But I do remember him explaining to my Dad that Catholics could never be shriners because there are secrets the shriners have, and a Catholic could be compelled to tell his secrets to a priest.

They are big into philanthropy and fund hospitals

I don't think Jews fitted into the equation anywhere, even in exclusion. And I don't know about black folk or latino folk - I never saw any as part of his band or in pictures of shriners. But my Dad could have been one, if he hadn't been a goddam longhaired beatnik
