If one is to analyze the cultural landscape around a lot of this stuff, I’d suspect those messageboards are ground zero for much of it. Calling it “post-racist” certainly doesn’t mean that they ethically recognize that this stuff is reprehensible - if anything it’s as bad or worse than “sincere” racism, because it’s coming from a place of irony and awareness. But as I said, they practically come out to the same thing: making people feel threatened and dehumanized.

you'd essentially be allowing a channel for all sorts of racist, homophobic, white supremest, threatening posts.
Yeah I suppose even if you make such a layer of Twitter optional to view, it still provides a platform for dangerous things to spread. I guess it all hinges on whatever censorship paradigm Elon chooses (EG that council with “diverse viewpoints”), which I doubt will be a cure worse than the disease of such dangerous things.

But with him, who knows?

don't kid yourself. racism is racism, "sincere" or "ironic/aware".
I agree - that was the conclusion I arrived at.

I still maintain that while these nuances don’t absolve this kind of behavior, they could be important for understanding the psychology of this behavior, as part of a larger effort of troubleshooting this stuff.

Troubleshooting EG: attempting to destigmatize therapy and make services available to young men who could otherwise develop in hateful directions. Once they have developed in such directions, I’d imagine it’s very difficult to reach them, especially if they have adopted a worldview where those who disagree with them are somehow categorically untrustworthy, or if the role models they turn to out of desperation foster within them a hatred for a given demographic of humans.

That said, I also believe you can only go so far for someone who isn’t willing to help themselves, but is nonetheless willing to harm others. IE I’m a bigger believer in preventative than palliative cures here.

EG unfortunately I think the majority of racists are lost causes here, but somehow I think the ironic ones are within reach. I could be wrong, but insofar as I understand the psychology, people in this category of hateful behavior, are the way they are not because they have racist notions baked into their identity, but because they are desperate to arouse strong reactions among normies. This motivation is no less reprehensible, seeing as, to state again, the behavior amounts to the same thing - but it may be more easily overcome via therapeutic practices than would genuinely racist motivations.

I could be wrong though. I don’t believe in giving the benefit of the doubt to these people - this is purely coming from a solutions-oriented perspective of diagnosing and overcoming cultural maladies.

In any case, I amend my position re Twitter, and I now suspect that an uncensored layer would be a net negative.

For the record, I do understand how so distanced a perspective as mine could be misapprehended as unduly lenient toward this behavior, which I condemn. IE I shouldn’t just attribute this disconnect to a lack of nuanced analysis on behalf of the interlocutor, nor should I expect everyone to understand when my discourse bleeds into shitposting.

I just think it tends to be easier to assess a situation with some distance, before reassuming a given position within the situation. Totally see why someone would disagree, though.

This is a very important and insightful point, visionary even, in my humble opinion.

I have always thought of you as one of the most sophisticated types on dissensus Martin, certainly the one with perhaps THE most developed and refined sense of humour, and so it's not surprise to see you confirming that here, but pleasant none the less.

If Martin were to "nick" that joke and post it on twitter, I think I'd like it then.

I've been called one of the most trustworthy people around, everyone gives me their trust and I never disappoint them, according to many trustworthy sources.

Actually @IdleRich I do have to come clean and admit that I had a nice chuckle after you explained the Jo Malone joke.

I'd have let my initial like remain.
