Gearslutz Q+A forum with Marshall Jefferson

Yeah i noticed that and got excited but then I couldn't think of anything worth asking him.

I mean I love the house music anthem and Hercules and all that but there's not much mysterious about the production and I reckon finding out which piano sample he used won't help me make a better record..... ymmv and all that.

Yes - same here I suppose.

Still, I'm sure a few stories will pop up that are worth reading / mildly amusing. It's already been revealed that he writes tracks in his head in the shower and while his girlfriend is talking to him, for example.

Of course, I don't think he used a real piano.

Why not? Would be easy to do. Anyway, I've just listened to the track for the first time in years, could be sampled, especially the fiddly parts at the beginning. I'd quite like to know where it is from now. ;) What about the vocals "Rock your body". You reckon that's a sample too?

I think you are misunderstanding me.
I'm not saying he sampled it from someone else's record. I'm not suggesting he sampled the whole piano part.
I'm saying it's not a real piano, it's a sampled piano preset in a ROM-based synth.

For example it could be from the Roland U220, which Marshall Jefferson has mentioned owning.

There is no way that somebody miked up a real piano and played it to make that record.

That's very interesting, because I love that piano sound, and have spent some time to recreate it with Logic and NI plug-ins, but I couldn't get anywhere near the target sound. I rationalised my failure by thinking that it was mic'ed from a real piano. I shall check out the U220.

Thanks!

forgive the derail, as a non-native speaker this intrigues me, is this a saxon word, a contraction of thank you, what is the origin?

babytalk from the north as far as i know.

i would happily be corrected though.

I liked this...

Q: Which DAW do you use and why?

A: I use Logic. I tried Cubase but it revolted against me, I couldn't figure it out. I'd click record and it wouldn't record. I bought Logic and I wrote a song 15 minutes after it was installed. So, I use Logic because it was easier for me to figure out than Cubase.
