At the beginning of 2008 writer Dan Hancox and artist Tom Humberstone spent 9,000 miles and seven weeks following the US Presidential Election on the ground, road-tripping through 24 states of the union, hanging out with POWs, Katrina survivors, vampires and Chelsea Clinton. Their blog, www.myfellowamericans2008.com, became an instant hit, lauded by The Times, The Guardian, The Telegraph, New Statesman, Dazed&Confused and leading politics bloggers like Iain Dale.

Now we are pleased to present My Fellow Americans, the book of the blog, and the first book published about the election, which will be available to buy for the first time on Wednesday 28 May at our launch party in The Cross Kings in (you guessed it) King's Cross. Entry is free, the food is good, and there's live music and DJs 7pm-midnight.

The book will be available to buy online from www.myfellowamericans2008.com and www.ventedspleen.com after the launch party. Selected stores in the UK will also distribute the limited edition first printing but if you would like to pre-order and reserve a copy (£8 inc p&p in the uk) please contact us at press@myfellowamericans2008.com.

Click here to view a pdf of the press release.

Hope to see some of you at the launch, everyone is welcome! Even Hundredmillionlifetimes ;)

Why thank you John and Dave!

So guess what: on the day of the final primary elections, six months to the day since we witnessed anarchy at the Iowa Caucus, My Fellow Americans is now AVAILABLE TO BUY!

http://myfellowamericans2008.com/blog/2008/06/02/book-available-online/

here's what some goddamned cool people have had to say about it already:

"A great mixture of laugh-out-loud funny and scratch-that-goatee-insightful"
Jesse Armstrong, writer of The Thick Of It and Peep Show

"I usually find politics depressing, but here's a case of seeing the American system through someone else's eyes, and being reminded that even if not in practice, the real idea behind democracy is giving a voice to everyone. With humor and charm, Dan and Tom get at what elections should really be about - the voters."
Jeffrey Brown, author of Little Things

pardon?

if anyone wants a laugh, me and tom were interviewed for bbc radio five live last night about our trip and the election:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/aod/main...adio/aod/fivelive_aod.shtml?fivelive/uan1_wed

skip to 3:07:40 to listen.. we will rip it into an mp3 anyway, if you'd prefer to wait. bit of background: the presenter rhod sharp was lovely, but his producers were obvs a bit crap, and so he'd done no background reading at all (not even our press release) and so he asked us rather vague q's that were more orientated towards political commentators than grass-roots road-trippers... but we managed to spin it around to talk about our book/blog/trip a bit nonetheless.

i also met mick jones from the clash and gave him a copy of the book, so happy.. :)

Nice one Mos Dan - I think it's really impressive to go through all the effort and stages necessary to bring a book to fruition and get it published and to get such good feedback must make it worthwhile. Nothing constructive to say except well done really.

thanks rich! it has been pretty effing tiring but it's all been worth it - tiring because ultimately we've done it all ourselves - tom did all the layout and design, i did the editing, tom found us a printer, we organised the distro and promo all ourselves. we had a bit of funding for the print but ultimately it's all been off our own bat. we are the jme of american election coverage. dun no d' bbc blog linkage: http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/thereporters/justinwebb/2008/06/over_already.html

i would add actually that woofah are kind of an inspiration in this respect: it's the 21st century, and if you have an idea you want to bring to fruition you can do it, provided your work-rate and concept are strong enough.

Tom is talking about My Fellow Americans and his other comic work on Resonance FM comic show at 5.20pm TODAY (i.e. five minutes time).

In other news, copies of the book are almost sold out now!! We didn't print thousands, but those few hundred that we did print have been very well received - and we're not planning to print any more, unless some bigbucks publisher does it for us...
