Euro 2008 - we support our local team

Alright, whose excited?

I'm actually genuinely pleased that England aren't in it this time, because (a) we don't deserve to be, and (b) it will give me a chance to concentrate on enjoying the football and ignore the associated misery of an England bid.

I will be supporting the motherland of (one half of) my ancestors, the Czech Republic, and hoping they duff up everyone bar my 'local' team, Turkey. The Beeb seem to be tipping France, Spain, Portugal, or Germany. Which is pretty vague of them. They also give 'us' Czechs more of a chance than we probably deserve, given our poor form this year and lack of striking options (Baros? Oh dear).

My housemates and I will be attempting to watch various European sides play in 'relevant' regional locations, for added cosmopolitan colour: so a bit of Portugal on South Lambeth Road, Italy in Soho, Turkey up and down the Kingsland Road, Poland in Balham/Brixton, and so on. We've even tracked down some Swedish and German pubs. If you want to join us just say so, updates will be posted on my housemates' Humble Football blog.

*Btw I know the 'Man Yoo' thread has a bit of Euro stuff in it, but enough is enough now: that thread title is offensive to most sane football fans in the world, even the way it's spelt is offensive to the eye, and the content isn't relevant to the Euros at all. I hope people don't object to a specific Euros thread, it does go on for a month after all :)

This sounds as though it could be fun. Did you find any Swiss (I got them in the sweepstake) pubs?

I simply don't know what you're getting at here.

thanks mr tea ;)

there used to be the swiss centre in leics square didn't there? i studiously avoid that area these days.. i think it's gone, right?

yeah sorry just a nod to your man u's hated status - i don't mind the idea of a rolling premiership thread, but it is a bit weird that it's a football chant for one particular team. especially one that, erm, a lot of people aren't too fond of.

"There's The Swiss Cottage, I guess. Though I've no idea how authentically Swiss it is."
I was going to say that but I didn't bother in the end. Isn't there some kind of Swiss restaurant/bar in Soho, maybe they will show the games?

I don't know Crackerjack, you start a thread that sounds like a Man Utd chant, you say you won't watch the final but somehow you just find yourself there - I think that you have a secret admiration that you can't own up to for the glamour of United and the mesmerising stepovers of young Christiano Ronaldo...

Great! I watched the end of the Spanish football season in a pub with a load of Iberians (an O'Neills, no less....) and it made the whole thing loads more fun, even if they were all a bit, "Why do you care?". Football wedding crashing is the best.

As I said in the other thread, it's Russia for me, so I'll be dressing badly and hanging out in overpriced bars near the King's Road. And then I'll go and watch Russia etc and so on

Spain, despite everything. I mean sooner or later, they just have to, don't they.

okay, so i now understand the intricacies of the redder than red thread and accompanying title, sorry for being dim before..

this seems a fair case. i am considering bets at the moment. i had torres at 20/1 for leading scorer in the world cup, which he probably would have been if they hadn't bluddy well got knocked out so early! curses. the price is a lot less attractive for this tournament now people outside of madrid have heard of him. i don't know who else i'd take for leading scorer though.. my mate said mario gomez, who i know almost nothing about, except i just found this on goal.com:

Gomez has six goals in just nine international caps and whilst this goal tally has been boosted with some impressive hauls against some of Europe’s lesser sides, he could make a big impression on Euro 2008. Gomez has been in deadly form in the league becoming the highest German player in the goal scoring charts in the Bundesliga with 19 in just 26 games. Nicknamed Mr Reliable by the Stuttgart fans for his finishing prowess, the 23 year old has already been tracked by Chelsea, Barcelona and AC Milan and could move on at the end of the tournament.

I've also chucked my 'free bet' on Romania which will net me a grand if they win. (Mixed Biscuits, I've got you down for a free packet of Hobnobs if the tip comes off).

I'd go for one of the Spaniards for top scorer - they play expansive football and with Torres and Villa (and no sodding Raul) Spain look like they should score for fun.

Regarding who to support The Guardian had a thing where every day for a week or so someone tried to sell a team to them and at the end they had a vote to see who the Guardian would support. Turns out The Netherlands are the most popular - everyone describes them as playing great football and I agee; I'm fed up of seeing dull workmanlike players win by strength, speed and hard graft, it will be a great change for the better to watch creative flair players who prosper using their guile such as Dirk Kuyt.

Champions League legend, right up there with Djimi Traore.

Not necessarily - there must be some pubs with tvs in even out in the country and if I have my way our visits to them may just coincide with football matches.

I managed to catch most of the Portugal v Turkey game (despite the protestations of my fellow campers) and I thought that Portugal looked pretty good although Turkey were showing a disappointing lack of ambition and belief.
So far all the games have gone pretty much as expected I guess, first big game tonight though with Netherlands v Italy.
My (forced) investment on Switzerland is already hanging by a thread... anyone been watching it so far?
