We think first
Of vague words that are synonyms for progress
And pair them with footage of a high-speed train.

Science
Is doing lots of stuff
That may or may not have anything to do with us.

See how this guy in a lab coat holds up a beaker?
That means we do research.
Here’s a picture of DNA.

There are a shitload of people in the world
Especially in India
See how we’re part of the global economy?
Look at these farmers in China.

But we also do business in the U.S.A.
Or want you to think we do.
Check out this wind energy thing in Indiana,
And this blue collar guy with dirt on his face.
Phew.

Also, we care about the environment, loosely.
Here’s some powerful, rushing water
And people planting trees.
Our policies could be related to these panoramic views of Costa Rica.

In today’s high speed environment,
Stop motion footage of a city at night
With cars turning quickly
Makes you think about doing things efficiently
And time passing.

Lest you think we’re a faceless entity,
Look at all these attractive people.
Here’s some of them talking and laughing
And close-ups of hands passing canned goods to each other
In a setting that evokes community service.

Equality,
Innovation,
Honesty
And advancement
Are all words we chose from a list.

Our profits
are awe-inspiring.
Like this guy who’s looking up and pointing
At a skyscraper or a kite
While smiling and explaining something to his child.

Using a specific ratio
of Asian people to Black people to Women to White men
We want to make sure we represent your needs and interests
Or at least a version of your skin color
In our ads.

Did we put a baby in here?
What about an ethnic old man whose wrinkled smile represents
the happiness and wisdom of the poor?
Yep.

and brought to life here:

there are no accidents
apt metaphor for industrial capitalism. we are currently, in 2014, at about... 1:40 i would say.

There is a bit on the Masters At Work RBMA lecture when some guy starts asking Louie Vega about 'Mambo Number 5' (by Lou Bega)

yes, i feel a bit shallow admitting it but this whole solange-jay z elevator beatdown thing made me chuckle, turns out the highest levels of entertainment royalty have fucked up family dynamics just like everyone else. she was pretty relentless on him, glad he just tried to protect himself instead of punching back.

also birthed a million jokes, of course: "now he's got 100 problems", "the biggest hit she's ever had", etc.

Mr. Tea

Let's Talk About Ceps
This shitty, shitty attempt at "science" "journalism":

Now the science bit, deep breath. Two varied photons are created using different methods. The first will use a high intensity laser to speed electrons up to near the speed of light. They will then be fired at a slab of gold which will beam photons with a billion times more energy than lightspeed. The second source is created by a high-energy laser fired into a gold canister called hohlraum (cavity, in German) which creates thermal radiation equivalent to the light of stars. The two forms then collide to create around 100,000 electron-positron pairs. And breath out.

Seriously, what the fuck? How can someone who by the sound of it failed their Combined Science GCSE be asked to write an article about an advanced piece of experimental physics? It's bizarre that this kind of ignorance goes completely unremarked on. The equivalent in an article on an arts/humanities topic would be a piece on the shortlist for this year's Booker Prize by someone who's never read a book that didn't have a single line of text and a colour drawing on each page.

Also, try making something useful out of "100,000 electron-positron pairs".

Fucksake.

Liz Hill concludes that Arts Council England’s ‘This England’ report is based on a carefully constructed analysis designed to disguise a London-centric funding strategy and preserve the status quo.

If I were to name my gurus, then high up on that list would be Ben Goldacre. He’s the writer, broadcaster and doctor who made his name by debunking the myths that have arisen from flawed research studies and misleading analysis of scientific data. In his best-seller ‘Bad Science’ he unpicks the myriad ways in which the press (and others) undermine and distort science in their quest for headline grabbing stories, and explains how the manipulation of data can persuade clever people to believe stupid things, in some cases to devastating effect.

I wonder what Ben would make of Arts Council England’s (ACE) latest report, 'This England: how Arts Council England uses its investment to shape a national cultural ecology', which forms the basis of its submission to the forthcoming Culture Media and Sport Select Committee enquiry...

(doesn't really fit thread title tbh)
