howdy,

i've been collecting juke & footwork mixtapes/tracks for years now but nowadays a lot of that stuff seems to have evaporated from the web - there's a ton of releases i'm aware of but incapable of buying or even d/ling online. Through archive.org you can see a bunch of old mix cds Jukezone.com were selling a few years back inc. dj rashad + spinn stuff plus a thadz release i don't have

After googling for some more info I found this seedy lookin' WOW FREE MP3S FOR UR IPOD!! site that had the Thadz & Rashad tapes: here + here - there's audio samples so the mp3s def. exist but the hell if i'm downloading some .exe from the site it redirects me to

so my question is: does anyone know much about the mix cds: DJ Rashad - Da Juke Project & DJ Thadz's The Juke-a-Lator 2? are they available to buy anywhere? if not, can anyone grab those damn mp3s from that site somehow and upload 'em somewhere if that's not infringing on anyone's copyright!

...sorry if that was a really nerdy post, it might come across as a bit mp3 horde-y but it always annoys me when potentially good music isn't archived for the future

btw. i don't use any of these torrent things so maybe the shit i'm talking about is easy to find but i wouldn't know... if so, apologies!

evaporating is the right word... I can't seem to find a certain Rashad track that made me swoon from back inna day. it samples Donald Byrd - Think Twice, but it's not this version:

I'm sweet on the more rabid, broken-footwork-to-the-point-of-jungle version. did anyone scoop that up from imeem or youtube, or does it still live online somewhere? it used to be labelled as Footworkingz Anthem but who knows if that's even its real name.

can't find a youtube, but maybe you mean DJ Spinn's 'Jazz 4 Ya Azz' from the Overkill compilation on Ghettophiles?

no sir. thanks though - I sifted through the Ghettophiles & Lit City releases to double check. I'll see if I can persuade the gentleman to dig it up...

Tokyo Jackin'
These guys have made a Juke label in Japan called BootyTune, what do you guys reckon? This video is from Outlook Japan last year which I played at with NTB. There still seems an emphasis on the dance which I don't think the UK got as much.

Speaking of Japan and juke. A mate of mine living in Tokyo has been following the scene over there. He said it literally started off with one guy doing the dancing and a couple of dj's, but has been growing since and they do dance too not just music.

He did a little set with japanese juke stuff on our radio show a couple of months ago, some great bits in there:

mp3:
http://mp3.breakbeat.is/breakbeat/bbis/breakbeat.is-2012-11-21.mp3 (starts off about 20 minutes in).

he wrote some stuff on the scene in Japan Times to:

@staypuft - There's a FootworkKingz track Rashad did that starts off with just vocals but halfway through comes in with a jazz sample off Jukeville. Not sure if it's what you're looking for but it might be worth a shot checking it out on beatport or something.

@mr. snub - I don't have Juke-a-later or da juke project, but I do have some older Thadz stuff if you're interested. The DM 255 Thadz/Chip split is cool for a couple reasons. It includes the first Spinn and Rashad releases to make it to vinyl, right before Dance Mania died off. The Spinn track "Mothafucka" has a really dope vocal sample and the Rashad track "Child Abuse" is an instrumental with a really bent up bass line. The DJ Chip side was controversial because the first track on his side was called "Bang Ski". That split album got released a couple months before Clents legendary "100% Ghetto - We 2 Ghetto 4 Ya!" which had the original track, "Bang Skeet (Original)". I heard Clent was pretty pissed about Chip biting off the track real hard.

I've got nothing but 100% respect for the Japan scene. Not only do they seem to be really passionate about the music, but they're definitely not overlooking the dance element which is just as important as (if not more than) the music element! I know there's a few guys from Japan who've visited Chicago and one guy, Takuya, is on Havoc. It seems like Japan is one of the only places that has a "scene" for footwork dancers outside of Chicago. St. Paul has got some stuff crackin though, and I know King Charles is working on dance stuff in LA. Creation is working on starting up chapters in NC and a couple other states as well.

Rashad was pretty heavy on hyperdub rinse show yesterday, having not listened to any juke stuff since the hype first hit UK a few years back it was a lot more accessible than i expected, a lot more jungle inspired i think.. one tune in particular had full jungle dread bass, was sick, need an ID.. though can't really give much more details than that, appalling memory

@DharmaEater

oh, i love dance mania, i've pretty much heard all of it, well at least all of it that i can find... the later really sparse proto-juke stuff is incredible ala tha motes
my all time favourite dance mania record is DJ Greedy & Sleepy J's Ghetto Work Out EP
i see DJ Flint has reissued some of the tracks included there on the Low End Legacy release on Juno, Flint deserves a lot of props actually - he's been putting out a lot of cool stuff that seems to fly under the radar - e.g. DJPJ's recent album
as for the whole Japan, i'm not at all into their take on footwork but this Japanese website (http://ghetto.seesaa.net) has the most comprehensive coverage of juke/ghetto house on the web...it's also worth noting that dudes like Clent have EPs out on Japanese labels, and i'm p sure Traxman has a mix CD out on Booty Tune...though i've avoided buying that so far 'cause those T-t-t-t-traaaaaaxman drops he puts on his mixes every fifteen seconds are insufferable

a much more calcinated strain of dnb. it's as if they have somehow forgotten footwork is basically house music...

noone should be ashamed of "picking up where jungle left off in 96, after all traces of playfulness were stripped to barren-wasteland "techstep" but the genre-tags are still juke/footwork which is a bit confusing, much like this interview

http://truantsblog.com/2013/introducing-dj-paypal/

where jungle is not mentioned in influences. it's conceivable 19yearolds are getting bored w/ Skrillex or whatever elevator-house is on FM and discovering there's a whole world out there, and stimbling right back to 96 chicago jungle without realizing there's a name for it, much like Raymond Scott never hyped up his 50s acid house and it got credited to someone else in the 80s

hey carmen, i was thinking something in the vein of fracture's get busy

rashad's set on the last hyperdub show is a clear indication of what i'm talking about - if you compare his 2011 set to this one, you'll clearly see a striking difference

also, what shiels said. rashad's been tweaking his sound to suit a uk jungle crowd...

i heard dj earl landed in paris. has anyone seen him live?

Earl is a really good live DJ. He can definitely hold his own and is up there with the best of 'em. I've seen him in a few different settings - battles, raves, and at clubs. He knows how to work a crowd, and while you might get a completely different set from him at a battle than at the club, he never strays too far from his base line (unlike say, traxman, who will play whatever the fuck he wants to). I guess understanding a crowd is a pretty big key to being a good DJ, hehe. If you watch any recent videos from BGz or WarZone online, chances are pretty damn likely that DJ Earl is the one spinning the tracks. I'm living in NC now and it's looking like we got something lined up for him next month. I'll be sure to post a flyer on here in case anyone's in the area and wants to come check it out.

Anyone else seen this House-O-Matics footage from '93? Holy shit, wow:
