you went on holiday by mistake

it happens

it inverts life, the whole schema of British holidays particularly, once you get past a fascination for rockpools and grow up

be January soon enough

is not like other people
i feel like writing a long post. as a student i only went to the union and the jeremy bentham and the northumberland arms (of which there are two) (either side of a block on tottenham court road). the TCR bar which was called that 20 years ago and still is. rising sun on northumberland st. there was a horrible looking box pub in fitzrovia too on the way to the ship. porcupine down charing x

always used to go to bar101 under centre point for a late drink, only other place after hours was mash bar down oxford st which charged entrance.

other west end pubs, champion, king & queen, gordon's wine bar basically a pub, the rocket, irish pub on euston road, rising sun on drury lane, cross keys in covent garden, bar café in holborn (also princess louise in holborn) which is now a craft pub i think, then that yellow one halfway between holborn and drury that claimed to be the oldest pub in london. wetherspoons round there like penderel's oak, also that odd one off holborn circus with a tree in it.

horrible place on oxford st that said it was the only pub on oxford st

duke of marlborough (?) just off oxford st opposite marks & spencer. there's a pub round there that used to be called i am the only running footman, it's been rebranded as the footman

chandos off trafalgar square, another sam smith's, horse and groom off marylebone road, soho pubs like the blue posts, at least 2 of those, the duke of someshit which had wicked old interior on broadwick st.

this is leaving aside all the pitcher and piano weird white interior places that still persist.

nice place called the lincoln lounge up york way.

not such a long post after all but fun reminisce

@woops 'cos I'm finding it too difficult to quote-pick bits out of your post...

Still love the King & Queen, assuming it's survived the past 18 months. Nice beer, cool staff, serves Monster Munch and they were showing horror/exploitation movies upstairs on Saturday nights before the pandemic kicked off - was meant to go to an '80s Lollywood horror double bill around March 2020 when it all went down. Some pubs just have great vibes, this is one of them, IMO.

Jeremy Bentham - is that the one round the corner from UCH? I used to want to live in Gordon Mansions, they have cherubs guarding the front doors.

Chandos had really nice banana beer.

The Holborn ones I like(d) most were The Enterprise and The Ship. Cittie of Yorke said it was the oldest? (though I think the oldest is actually Lamb & Flag, don't quote me). There's another one in Holborn called The Old Nick, which had a rat infestation when I went. Can't remember the name of the one opposite The Enterprise, think it has some sea creature frolicking under a red sun on the sign? But that's OK if you want to sit in a quiet, dead pub and numb yourself (enjoy that sometimes).

pubs in crystal palace tend towards the daycare/creche end of the market. the men wear funky t-shirts and cargo pants and addidas sambas. the women have broad child-bearing hips. the children roll over the floor. there are roast dinners with vegetarian options. there are midmarket craft beers and cask beers. its affluent suburbia with no fashionable people.

Thank you Luke, you really have whetted my appetite for my romantic weekend away with my wife. We will fit right in.
