London pubs

I know you all live in the groovy / louche corners of London but you really should try and have a pint at the Southampton Arms in NW5 some time, it's one of the area's saving graces, along with Hampstead Heath. You're missing out I tell you.

This sound stricltly for the overground!

But yeah, I'm thinking of heading over there with Alison soon, sounds excellent.

It's not very outdoors but there's a little enclosed courtyard out back which might be pleasant on a balmy night. Also means if you smoke you don't have to stand on Highgate Rd.

Oh and they seem to change up the ales and ciders almost weekly so there's always something to try, though there are some favorites.

Darned cockwombles.
If ever in Highgate, The Flask is a nice pub.

If ever in Herne Hill, the Half Moon and the Florence are both lovely.

never been in those last two but can picture the former (after having FAPed them) and are intrigued.

my brother lives on Denmark Hill and i have been to various places round that area before now, Camberwell, the pubs (and one bar) opposite both Denmark and Herne rails (Phoenix and Commercial), some boozers near the college hospital etc, but i want to check these out, the Half Moon always looks friendly.

quality area round there, close to Brixton, Dulwich, good links to town and out south.

that 'spoons on Denmark Hill has a big beer garden, though it's not quite fashionable north east London Dissensian territory ;)

Half Moon is a great place - their open mic night is genuinely excellent too. i Kinda love Escape too (next to the Commercial, may have closed now, not sure), where I've seen LKJ drinking a few times.

Don't know Denmark Hill so well, though my friend took me to the pub there inside the station, which is surprisingly nice, and which I guess must be the Phoenix? Camberwell's great for pubs too, as you say.

PS and yes, north London is shit.

When it was the Phoenix & Firkin they had the best / worst of the Firkin puns on their beermats.

"Phoenix my pint I'll Firkin thump 'im."

oh the Firkin gags. by the time you'd bought your firkin pint, ordered your firkin burger and found your way to the firking loos, you were getting a bit firked off

a mate of mine put a decent night on at that Escape once, i think it has closed down now, yes. Phoenix in Denmark Hill rail it is, never ate there but the food looks decent. not the cheapest pub in Ldn but i like it.
there's a fine little coffee stall inside that station too, one of those little Puccini's or whatever.

well impressed w LKJ intel! will tell our kid and my mate.

Good shout.

Quite a pleasant hour's walk over there from Green Lanes, several nice pints, live trad jazz and then a swift overground trip back.

Would also work quite nicely with an evening wander on the Heath, I think...

Has the Wenlock Arms been mentioned? Love that place, just of City Road up Wharf Road a bit.

Scruffy, loads of real ale and friendly people (I asked a woman in there what she would recommend as she was drinking an ale and she insisted on my trying a bit of hers..!)

Love that place too, only been there a couple of times though. It was there that I ate my first ever pickled egg. I felt like I'd finally become a man.
