The objectionable Michael Portillo

Did anyone see his appearance on newsnight review on friday?

What a horrible, deluded man- problems with politics are not politicians fault, but rather the publics' and even more depressing, his contention (when discussing the Paraquay youth orchestra), that working class people have no aspirations, hate education, are lazy and stupid (I paraphrase).

I feel a little better now

Yeah him and Clemency doublebarrelled-blonde make an inspiring double act.

You did get the feeling that Portillo actually thought any kind of political satire was out of order.

Fuck them and their high culture anyways. ;)

Why the surprise though, he was one of the most hard right members of Major's cabinet and made his hostility clear umpteen times - for some reason, when he came out of the closet, some sections of the media thought it proved there was a liberal lurking beneath, but he's always been Norman Tebbit, though not quite as mentally ill.

It's interesting tho cos he tried to go through this period of "rebranding" didn't he? I seem to remember something quite confessional about it all. Also there was stuff like his rather sensitive tv documentary about the death penalty. (In which he simulated drowning, iirc? Which I found very satisfying TV.)

Not suprised, just depressed that the views he expressed weren't immediately shot down by all present (esp. the class thing), although Hislop gave it a go. Also somewhat interesting, given as John says, his attempt to rebrand.

Carol Thatcher was on BBC yesterday as well, refusing to apologise for being a racist. She didn't even have to die to get forgiven :(

i dont really like ian hislop.

i quite like private eye but he is insufferably smug.

michael portillos comments about it not being 'up-to-date' are ironic arent they?

I believe she has been willed into some kind of pseudo-existence by the collective unconscious of broadsheet readers in the home counties.

No good will come of it, mark my words!

I think I've played in a concert where she was the violin soloist. So yeah, I guess she is real...
