Beast of Burden
@craner a friend in Chicago just dropped off his daughter for her first year at Cardiff University. any top tips for an 18-year old midwesterner new to your idyllic land?

I'm sure she will quickly become familiar with all of the, uh, delights that Cardiff has to offer an 18 year old student, including 'Chip Alley' mentioned by Hands. Cardiff is a big enough city to entertain and small enough to be comfortable. Or to look at it another way: it is big enough to avoid being too parochial, but not big enough to avoid being too parochial. The biggest assets are Roath and Bute parks, the Victorian arcades and the large stadium located in the city centre. If she likes flowerbeds, coffee shops and rugby, she'll never want to leave.

But once she is sick of Cardiff and therefore settled in, she should graduate to 'deep Wales'. This is, for me: the Gower peninsular; the A477 from Carmarthenshire to Pembrokeshire (i.e. the route from Laugharne to Skomer); the Brecon Beacons and the Black Mountains; Hay-on-Wye, Usk and the Wye Valley. Anything anybody could want exists in this southern belt.

Think I'll print it out to see if that helps me read it. I don't think I can read one on the screen.

Remember the carers in the home saying "What language is it your grandmother keeps speaking, is it Lithuanian or something?"
