Yeah, come to think of it, Welsh media classes are pretty London obsessed. Particularly television circles.

My friend and I came up with some Welsh words last night (over drinks at The Queen's Larder, another Craner-recommended London boozer). Things like

Fwltur
Pwcnc
Treiffl
Dwck
Doomio etc.

But nothing that came close to terfysgwr. That takes a special crazed logic way beyond our addled limits.

Darned cockwombles.
Craner, you may be able to help with a pub/Wales crossover question - what on earth has happened to the Cadogan Arms on the King's Road? It used to be a great place to watch the rugby, but it seems to have closed completely.

No idea, sorry, never been to that one.

I seem to always end up watching the matches at the Montague Pyke on Charing Cross Road, which is an absolute pit of a place, but is down the road from where I work on Saturdays and has an enormous screen.

Beast of Burden
On Conor Cruise O Brien:

Southern politicians dreaded and feared the awakening of the northern Kraken, civil servants in Dublin wrote pungent memoranda about the damaging hypocrisy of anti-partitionist propaganda and the need to build reassuring relationships with Northern unionism, but in public politicians danced through the steps of the traditional Reunification Reel. The parallels with the governing hypocrisies about speaking the Irish language were obvious - another of O'Brien's pet subjects. "The Gaelic Revival Movement," he wrote in the Irish Independent in 1991, "failed to revive, and its only movement was backwards. But it did generate a huge amount of political hypocrisy and - what was worse, because more insidious - a habit of listening to official nonsense, in an approving sort of way, as you might listen to the prattle of an innocent child."

I have this ricocheting around my head whenever I look at Wales.

The whole of this article is great, by the way.

I want to say that I went to Hay-on-Wye recently, and I was disgusted. Every single bookshop sold absolute crap for inflated prices. I assume the booksellers are simply exploiting stupid American tourists and selling their best stuff via Abe and Amazon Marketplace. I was looking for second hand copies of Arden Shakespeares to finish the collection and couldn't find one. Only falling-to-pieces Penguins being sold for 4 fucking pounds.
When I went there I found about two shops that were quite good, there rest were basically crap.

Which probably doesn't justify the train journey from London...

I fucking love Wales, me. I grew up in Hereford, which is just across the border from Hay. We went to New Quay (the Welsh one) for two weeks every summer when I was a kid. Best country on earth, as long as you don't mind standing in sheep shit.

Smashed fish and chips at Beales due to @craner ’s recommendation this weekend. My son said “fucking banging butt”, I was so proud. More cwtchy Celtic Identitarianism

Got to the Mumbles and the Gower‘s serene glaze. The shrubs and gorse that grow wizened and angular from elemental blasts yet still comforting, contrasted with a green-grey horizon down to Devon. The roads in, narrowing, out and walking among more and more shades of green and dappled lichens. Even in the rain it shone and swimming in the rain made the sea seem warmer
