speaking of negative energy...this is a like a black hole of negativity...

riding around the city on a bicycle at night, listening to this on headphones...(shakes head)

simultaneously the high/low point for post-techstep dark dnb? it's properly unfathomable that this was a major club hit (right?). that kind of swinging dancehall (as in, like, a 40s dancehall big band jazz, not Sizzla & Capleton) vibe is what knocks it over the top...

Well yeah, kiiinda...though TG and Neubauten are pretty far removed from Pentangle!

Well, TG was straight from COUM, who started off as a Hapshash/Amon Duul-type improv-psych group. I think that whole thing in "Rip it up and Start again" about industrial being darkside psychedelia is pretty much spot on (and isn't "darkside psychedelia" basically what this thread is about?)

Yeh Fenriz has always been an odd man out (in the best way). I reckon he's just a huge music nerd & genuine music lover. check out this interview where he discusses his love of house music (!!!).

:D Seems to be a typical goofy metal kid.

You're all pussies. Michael is the king of darkness. Making a song about the abuse of trust that happens when one force feeds people demerol before being done on child abuse charges? Out-dark that.

See the breakdown at 2.49 where he says 'relax, this won't hurt...before I put it in, close your eyes and count to ten'. I defy anyone not to get real, actual shivers.

dunno if this is a fair reading of metalheads, mostly true as far as it goes but not the full picture. for one there's always been a countering leftist streak in metal (they are musicians after all) - Nuclear Assault, some Metallica (mostly Cliff Burton I guess tho also "One"), Megadeth - Peace Sells (which is specifically about that stereotype of metalheads), Anthrax & PE. plus a lot the more underground extreme stuff - death metal, black metal, etc. - is too scenesterish/elitist for that audience - fans are usually more urban/hipper/etc.

Yeah, there's a gap between the left-leaning artists and their fans, earlier in metal history. Now it's closed with the introduction of indie metal/black metal.

Mistersloane is right--some of the scariest songs are pop songs. Most of the super depressing ballads and love songs are pop too. Like Elton John. When I was a kid, I thought he was like sunshine happy pop music. Then I realized whoa this is the most depressing shit I have ever heard in my life.

Sorry, but this made me feel a bit queasy.

'Indie-ustrial' would be the most ill-advised genre crossover ever, I reckon.

Talking of dark music in more general terms, gek-opel wrote a good post on here a year or two ago about why he thought Joy Division sounded not merely bleak and miserable, but actually evil.

Yeah, I always found "Daniel" really depressing as a kid when my parents played his greatest hits CD. It's a bit mawkish but a nicely arranged song, anyway.

What always used to really sound sad to me as a kid was all my gran's crooners singing ballads, stuff like Perry Como or Sinatra. I couldn't bear it, haha.

Hm, from what I've heard of Fuck Buttons (i.e. a couple of Youtube clips) I wouldn't really call them industrial, more a kind of fuzzed-out experimental electro noise doo-dad. Though obviously that's more or less what industrial was 30-odd years ago.

I don't know Wolf Eyes. I suppose I was thinking more of something obviously ludicrous, like Damon Albarn collaborating with Skinny Puppy, sorta thing.

Is Wolf Eyes still around? Jeez here I thought they were going to be just another Pitchfork flash in the pan...

I think you'll find that, if you scrutinise them closely, a lot of the songs on the 'good songs by bad artists' thread are really quite dark.

i've occasionally wondered what the appeal is with neo-folk, particularly death in june. why is he always pictured standing in a field, wearing a corny mask? maybe it's a uk thing that just doesn't translate to the states.

i think someone said: the dark shit is hedonism for a lot of people.

i'm aware of this alleged connection from all that EBM industrial i listened to as a kid, all the sinister bondage imagery and all that, but i was thinking today that i never really knew how exactly that worked, and still don't. how does this logic go?

i mean, being pissed off isn't exactly the most pleasurable way to live is it?

(ahhhhhhhhh yes! i'm going to enjoy my weekend to the hilt by wearing black eyeliner and screaming at the sky!!!)

is indulging in anger and all those emotions which are frowned upon by society supposed to be "hedonistic"? but is the pleasure to be had by "taboo busting", "transgression", and general "deviant" behavior for its own sake anything more than that of a baby who just learnt to say "no"? it may be an exercise of existential "freedom", ala Camus and noble negation, suicide being the ultimate act of free will and what not, but it has nothing to do with Pleasure.

seems to be more about frustration and inability to indulge rather than excessive pleasures of the flesh.
