though i think he was much more effortless sounding as an MC in the PAYG days, and even early roll deep era...

yes and no. obviously changeover from rave, crowd hyping style to more like actual rapping was a universal thing in grime. Wiley himself improved by leaps and bounds as an MC from 2003 to 2005/6, it's crazy how much better he got actually. I'm def not someone who thinks more complexity = better in rapping but seriously listen to any one of the Tunnel Visions and tell me it's not far superior to his PAUG bars (which are still entertaining of course). btw as someone else said his official albums always sound forced for whatever reasons, his mixtapes are always better.

def true that he's way more of a natural producer tho. he as a producer is like Trim is as an MC (which makes it all the more impressive that for a minute he was as good of an MC as Trim. just for a minute but still). or he was. I dunno if he has his producing fastball still.

oh + before I forget tho. any quibbling aside: hearing Wiley spit over R-Type is a glorious, perfect moment that tears a hole in the fabric of spacetime conti-nuum

I didn't hear much of Wiley in the PAUG days bar Nicole's Groove, but he didn't excite me that much. Cut to early Roll Deep days and he's got the same bars as before, but his delivery is MUCH better. Makes you realise how good those lyrics were in the first place.

Check this 2003/3 sidewinder set for Wiley at his most energetic. It's not on Grimetapes so you mightn't of heard it before. For those of you who hate fake American accents, you'll be glad to hear that B-Live's mic has the volume on low.

it was really a new thing in 99 to hear wiley and riko for the first time. they done a live phone in. it was at the time plaistow soldiers and african devils from barking were warring and it got took over by that lot shouting abuse at each other. wiley was shouting suck your mum a lot. riko was talking about doing armed robberies in lumm polly. jungle mcs were always telling you not to smoke crack. postivity. it was a new thing. shouting e3 every 5 minutes. ive said it before before but hearing that show made it obvious what was about to happen.
