quite interesting aside

"The strip of Wilmslow Road that slices through Rusholme has been known as the 'Curry Mile' for many years, but with a third of its restaurants now serving Middle Eastern cuisine, is it time it was called the 'Kebab Mile' instead?"

"It is a reason why the Curry Mile is currently being transformed by the presence of Iranian, Kurdish, Lebanese and other Middle Eastern influences," explains Dr Karla.

incidentally, what few food critics there are in this area generally tend to damn quite large areas of Rusholme's Wilmslow Road corridor, though it is the most popular place for subcontinental eats in the conurbation i'd think.
this might say more about the local food writers than anything else, but to generalise somewhat haphazardly, you are more likely to get other areas like, say, the Stockport Road down Longsight or Levenshulme way, or less traditional (from the classic Anglo-Indian flock-wallpaper pov) and/or more upmarket eateries in posher suburbs like Chorlton, Ramsbottom and Altrincham, or the Milkstone Road in Rochdale, or caffs on the northern edge of the city centre and Cheetham (my personal faves TBH), bigged up in preference.

couldn't comment for other British cities, save i know Birmingham (like Mcr and Ldn) has posh 'new wave' joints in town, and then the critically acclaimed balti triangle is not too far out of the centre.

(Adil's Balti, Stoney Lane, Sparkbrook, B12. fuck me - is there a drools icon?)

There's a 'nuum at work here - ;) - that goes: Greek ('gyros', usually pork) -> Cypriot (halloumi etc.) -> Turkish (the canonical doner kebab - invented in Berlin, of course) -> Irani/Afghan (more emphasis on minced meat: the kofte) -> Indian subcontinent (chicken tikka kebab, ancestor of the Anglo-Bengali tikka masala).

Many 'Turks' who've settled in London are actually Kurds, of course, who fit in between Turkey and Iran in the above 'nuum. Hence the availability of kofte in Green Lanes kebab takeaways.

Beast of Burden
Yeah, my old booze dealers in Bow were Kurds, who took over the shop from Turks. I found out that they were Barzani clan boys, one night when really drunk, and buying more booze. Barking: "Talabani or Barzani???"

This is very true, people can get quite sniffy about eating curry in the curry mile, like it's just soooooo obvious. Of course, for the best in Manchester you need to bob down Burton Road to the Gurkha Grill (at least in my day).

I have been to one upmarket swanky indian place and it was not the best, pay twice as much for a meal with more 'refined' tastes when a really you would have enjoyed a fat tayyabs twice as much anyway.

yep, there's about four Nepalese places in Didsbury isn't there?
i think the GG expanded its covers recently too, BTW. there is definitely the best regarded AFAIK.
i must give a shout to the Himalayas in Levenshulme; had these astonishing veggie dumplings from them recently.

well spotted BBR, i didn't notice that!

not a great deal, they're just friends of mine....
what would be an appropriate exchange in a gift economy?
given that i don't have a national cuisine of my own to impress them with.

Well it's not really a 'starter' cheese, is it? You do have to train yourself to believe that it is not, in fact, going to poison you horribly. Took me a while, though I'm glad I persevered.
