The cutting edge of retro

I forgot how big this show was for the first 3 series or so. And it wasnt just the X-Files, the show almost single handedly gave birth to a massive industry peddling tales about UFO abductions and so on.

Come to think of it the paranormal stuff was pre-empted by this Sarah Greene show

Looking through that page, it appears that someone really did commit suicide after watching the show. On a suicide related tip, who remembers the rumour that 2 Unlimited died in a car accident. I think it comes from the fact that one of the producers of Culture Beat died in a car accident. Culture beat...

Michael Bracewell, the author and cultural commentator says that a sort of cultured, distanced irony was the hip attitude/position to adopt in certain artsy/literary circles in the 80s, (think Jay McInerney, Jeff Koons, Pet Shop Boys) then irony seeped more and more into the mainstream during the 90s and coupled up with a sort of faux-yobbish psuedo-authenticity (think Damien Hirst, Oasis, Frank Skinner).

Sounds about right. Maybe it's just that I was 16 in 1997 and that's roughly when I started to become aware of irony as a form of cultural currency.

Like twats who say "Aren't earwigs really '80s?" as if that's a funny, ironic thing - no you numpties, it's just that you'd grown out of looking under rotten logs by 1991.

Dodgy "Lawnmower Man"-style early 3D graphics

Anything to do with virtual reality including the huge chunky headsets

Ironic appreciation of the hippy-dippy/PLUR aspects of rave culture

General early 90s new-age mysticism colliding with ecstacy/ambient music/computers/awful CGI

Really crummy mid 90s websites with lots of lame HTML gimmicks, Times New Roman used as the only font and pointless (sometimes animated) clipart that took ages to load on yr 486

80s has been done to death and anything after '96 is too soon, imo. So we're drawing our inspiration from the 89-95 era, here. Don't bring up cool stuff or genres like Jungle or Garage that are too obvious and already curated/canonised enough. Rock is out of the question because it was already retro by then in the first place.

It's sad but typical how this thread starts with swears being really very prescient and astute then immediately descends into basic nostalgia triggers with no attempt to address the premise of the thread. Absolutely moronic and clueless.

who was it was suggesting a nostalgia for the realitvely healthy and well adjusted music of the turn of the century... based on someone or other rapping on a missy elliot instrumental? that sounded convincing to me.

Even see it politically, I forget the thread, but someone on here was talking about the warped perspective gen z has for the golden age of neoliberalism re: tony blair

There were two guys on the Pynchon sub who were like 20/21 and were full on neoliberals. One of them went to a Biden rally and had a hoodie and the other was genuinely in awe of Obama.

They grew up with a semi visible left. Imagine going to school and catching dismissive glances from the sexy marxist table on your way to the lunch line, you might love Obama too

There was also a Trump supporter who was an expert troll. He started a huge argument by saying he slept with loads of liberal women and that Pynchon was actually right wing.
