Good Anime Videos

Any suggestions? The less said about Akira & Ghost in the Shell the better as I'm sure most people have seen them.

Some of my percees:

Castle of Cagliostro- a great Lupin III full length movie by Miyazaki. I just love the 70's feel to this, it's set in a small fictional European principality which wikipedia describes as ruritanian, whatever that means. Very charming movie.

Patlabor- made by the team who did Ghost in the Shell. Quite a complex story, though unlike Ghost you eventually understand it after a few watches rather than pretending to understand it. It portrays big robots in a mostly civillian fashion, no sci-fi to be had here. A slow paced movie for sure but very classy.

Robotech- I'm not the most impartial person when commenting on this, as unlike many I have had the luxury of watching 35 episodes in the space of a few weeks. It always looked too childish to me, but when I saw the 13 hour boxset it in a shop for under a tenner I decided to give it a go. First few episodes were disapointing. Animation was piss poor even for the time, and it was clearly a saturday morning kids show. However the more I watched it either a) the story & animation got better. b) I just got used to the series. Probably both, but the point is that as the show progresses it gets more and more endearing. mediocre star wars dog fights are the excuse for a much more interesting story. It basically pits humankind against a warmongering alien race. The real battle is won by introducing the philistine aliens to music & love. Over several hours of aliens defecting to the other side thanks to pop records, you cant help think that at the time of release would have had connotations of people from the Eastern Bloc defecting to the west so they could get their hands on all those shiny consumer goods. As good as robotech is though, i cant really seeing it work if you were watching it in drips and drabs.

Overrated Anime-

Wings of the Honneamise- On its initial release this was billed as a film that would break anime into the mainstream. To me it was so so. The alternative universe thing was okay but the film was just too boring.

Grey- On the front cover a reviewer is quoted, implying that this film is the ultimate piece of work that shows the futility of war. give me a fucking break, it is nowhere near as profound as it was made out to be. I have to disclose that I looked forward to seeing this for a decade, and I also dislike a lot of these stories set in an evil dystopian future police state. But in parts this develops into the silliest of sci fi

Dont really watch anime, though I do like the Azumanga Diaoh and Cromartie series'. Also the Lum films are worth a watch.

Its paradoxical. Ozamu tezuka introduced an amazingly fluid and cinematic style to manga, but his major contribution to anime? The cost driven 'innovation' of having static cells on screen for what seems like hours with nothing but the characters mouth moving...

PS: The 'grey' manga is quite good...

Yeah... Mamoru Oshii directed the first one 'Only you', and it's very funny.

Paprika by Santoshi Kon is absolutely amazing. Philip K Dick storytelling with incredibly visuals. If like that, check out the series Paranoia Agent which is equally mad, disorientating and weird though (general watching tip for any anime series), you have to wait till half way through the run till it starts getting good.

good revive. get the sense that not as many people in the UK are into anime as in the US?

i was going to do a thread a while ago called "anime profile pic rap". the idea was that people like carti or x or lil peep showed the aesthetics of internet-dwelling anime kids and normal popular kids converging. kids with sasuke uchiha avatars commenting on chief keef music videos.

it's not unheard of here. it was big with the black lads in the 90s. im not sure what happened to it since then. steadily growing? i havent been doing enough research in this area.

I love Studio Ghibli, does that count? I've been working my way through their catalogue on Netflix over lockdown.

There's LOADS of anime on Netflix now. I think it's their strategy for taking on Disney+.

Also a fan of Makoto Shinkai who did 'Your Name'/'Weathering with You'.

I've made one or two aborted attempts to watch 'Akira'.

Ghibli is great. One of my fave Miyazaki things is a series he worked on in the 70s called Future Boy Conan. Lesser known work of his but totally brilliant and if you have kids they have to see it.

Few other series I really enjoyed

Mushi Shi
Kemonozume
Kaiba
Cowboy BeBop
Samurai Champloo

Would unreservedly recommend all

It's another generational marker. I can enjoy it but I don't speak it with fluency. *cue fat middle aged man laughing at kids with their "cartoons!*
