Move Down Low / Loser out Monday July 13th | ERZULIE02

Grievous Angel

Beast of Burden
One year on from the first release on Devotional Dubz, Lady Dub, here's the second:

Grievous Angel Ft. Rubi Dan: Move Down Low: Bubblez' Funky remix
Lady Saw & Cecille: Loser: Bubblez' Funky refix
Devotional Dubz ERZULIE02

It's out on Monday and the pressings are in the country and sounding fat. Most of the usual suspects should be stocking it and Red Eye have it on pre-order. There's only 400 for the world and as ever, no represses and no downloads - not for Loser anyway.

Most of you know the story on this one but for those that don't... Both tunes have been staple elements of Kode9's sets for six months. He cut Move Down Low as soon as he received it and was playing it at the inaugural night of rinse's beyond 24 hours after it was made. Skream opened a lot of his sets with Loser as well as playing it on Rinse. Ghislain poirier has been all over Loser after Tim Dub Boy played it in bristol - Dub Boy's been on it for ages. Blackdown and Brackles have played them on Rinse and in the clubs, Heatwave, Monkey Steak and Atki2 have been caning them, and Dave Sharma in New York's had it in his box as a guaranteed floor filler for ages... And the Guardian wrote about it months ago (http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/musicblog/2009/feb/23/scene-and-heard-funky-dubstep).

These tunes still go off and ignite crowds from funky, dubstep, garage, house and bashment scenes. They're worth having for a bass-heavy, bashy take on funky.

For Lady Dub I did a mix that got released through FACT Magazine.

This time I've done a mix for Bristol's amazing Crazy Legs nightclub that showcases both tunes alongside the garage, house and UK Funky tunes that inspired them. It's a bit of a banger! The mix is still up here if you want to check these out: http://www.divshare.com/download/7811231-abe. Move Down Low is on the myspace.

Thanks to all the DJs that have been representing these tunes...

Paul, you know that I love your music and you know that I will buy these tunes, but I have to ask, what is the reasoning behind taking this approach?
Not a dig, I'm genuinely interested to know. (It's a topic that actually seems to be coming up a lot of late).

Well... 400 is probably plenty for the likely demand, in all honesty! 1000 is quite big sales these days. So to support the shops selling the vinyl, you need to delay the download release for a bit - unless you have enough scale to support both a vinyl run and a download, which of course I don't have.

Then there's the legal hassle of doing download sales. It's no problem with Move Down Low, cos that's just me and Rubi. But doing downloads of Loser is asking for trouble - the original was on a major label. So that probably won't ever be a download. I'm looking at doing MDL as a download though, maybe through my own little shop like Roska does!

So the way I'm trying to square this is that if you buy the single but need a digital version, get in touch and I'll send the masters over. :)

It's ripe for abuse but most people don't want to take the piss - just not worth their time.

Thank you, that all makes a lot of sense. Obviously I can understand that there's no point going to the expense of pressing more copies that you expect to sell. I suppose I was more surprised at you saying 'no represses' in advance, as to me the decision to repress would be based on sales of the first run, and you never know when something might become a surprise success, etc. I can also totally understand about supporting the record shops through giving them an initial vinyl-only period, though.
(I'd neglected to consider the, erm, particular status of Loser :) ).
Downloads are still such a tricky topic, aren't they? There are a lot more legal download options than there used to be, but part of me is still surprised that more artists don't make use of this method to sell their tunes, even if they continue producing hard-copy versions too. It's a nice steady little earner, whether you decide to sell them yourself or set up a distribution deal with someone you are obviously free of all the production costs incurred through pressing vinyl or even in a minimal way through burning/packaging/distributing cds (you'll know all this already of course, being an artist and someone with business knowledge). Of course, the risk is always that some sod will buy the file and then immediately stick it up on Soulseek or equivalent for anyone to grab for free. But then you get into all the old debates about how many of those sharers/poachers would have bought it anyway. The question of whether legal pay dowloads increase or decrease profits is probably an empirical one that you'd have to study over time.
