Forgotten or lost or minor jungle classics 93-94

Beast of Burden
This thread is inspired by my belated discovery of DJ Gwange alluded to on the jungle auteurs thread. There's a bewildering amount of brilliance from this very short period, even 15 or so years on you keep coming across unheard gems. Hence, I just found DJ Gwange!

I can't get over how singular DJ Gwange is. I love his sound. It reminds me a bit of K.M.A circa the 'Re-con Mission' EP -- do you know what I mean? A new sound barely hanging together at all, lush and dark, delicious and sinister, arythmic but rolling, morbid, bluesy, convoluted, scrappy. And, like K.M.A, there're only a handful of records to his name. (Unlike K.M.A, DJ Gwange is barely remembered, it seems.)

There's an awful lot to share. DJ Gwange is the least of it.

Edit: the other tracks I was on about posted here.

I think this really is a lost classic:

Bay-b-kane and Peshay in 1993. I picked it up a year later, because I liked the look of it, and was completely floored. It's about 4 tracks condensed into 1! That's a thing I love about this era: the intense and wanton expenditure of ideas...

tis well true of course. I could happily nerd out on a million threads about jungle minutiae.

DJ Gwange was part of the Legend Records crew along with Spinback & Q Project. the first 5 or 6 Legend releases are more '93 darkside business (but still w/traces of ethereal, ambience, etc.) & from there out it's pure ambient jungle business very much in the vein of Timeless Recordings, early GLR, etc.

some more Legend Records brilliance:

Q Project - Beyond This World - this one is just, I dunno, serious. almost like a darkside flip to "Aquarius".

people may know this one but what the hell. Foul Play under a different name. utterly genius, utterly alien, beamed down to us from prophets in the year 3984. tunes like this make me OK w/Foul Play topping 4 Hero in the junglist auteur poll. the vocal sample is from "Tears".

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value=""></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Pugwash (later Bizzy B collaborater) & some other dude inna '93 Remarc/Bizzy B utterly made darkside rinseout stylee

there are loads & loads more but I need to stop myself cos I'll waste a good hour on this.

reckon this thread could also be called "great jungle tunes that don't fit into the junglist auteur thread".

This is by far my favourite jungle tune ever. So beautiful.

Is anyone familiar with 'Arkines Lost' by Canopy & Matrix? Brilliantly sinister track featuring one the most haunting vocal samples I've ever heard.

It was included in the 1994 segment of the 'Peelennium' but there's a real dearth of info. about the record and its producers on the web. Managed to download an MP3 but the dodgy sound quality suggests that the person who uploaded it owns a tape of the Peel show, not the 12" vinyl.

This is another one I got by accident and dirt cheap a couple of years after it came out. I brought it mainly because it was on a record label called Skeleton Recordings (!), had a very silly/sinister skull and crossbones logo, and also because it was recorded at No-U-Turn's studio in 1994 and this was 1996 and I really liked the then-current No-U-Turn output. I didn't expect full-on ambient jungle, I must say.

Steve C & Monita, 'Razor's Edge'/'Full Cry'

Hyper On Experience, 'Disturbance (Tango Remix)'/'Halfstepper'

The Tango remix was the thing on this 10", but the other side was quite lovely.

Engineered by Dillinja, this is by Ragu & Stalker:

One of my favourite ever Dillinja tracks alongside 'You Don't Know (Remix)', this is his remix of Kym Mazelle's 'Genius':

Popular artist again, but perhaps a less well known track - Photek as The Truper:

<object width="320" height="265"><param name="movie" value=""></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="320" height="265"></embed></object>

In my opinion Coolhand Flex should have his own reverential compilation on Planet µ like Bizzy B, Remarc etc. All about the drop at 1m33s:
