Tentative Mixing

This is the 2nd attempt I've made at putting together a mix for other peoples' listening, and the 1st attempt where I've decided to share the end result.
I'm not under any illusions as to this being some kind of masterpiece: it's on software, there are certainly a few clangs and clatters, and also some points where although the tunes are in time and in harmony with each other they just weren't the best choices to put together. Also although obv I like the selection, as I don't really have access to any unreleased/exclusive things many of the tunes will be well-known to people here.
But all that said, I'm still putting it out there because sharing and getting feedback on this stuff is the only way I'll improve, and because I want to contribute something back after taking so much great music from others on the forum. Also there are a few blends on here that I'm genuinely proud of. Enjoy!

Really enjoyed this actually. See what you mean about the mixing at times but who cares, selection's good.

Thanks Slackk, means a lot. :D
My mixing will get better, don't worry. Practicing pretty hard right now.
Wise, looking forward to hearing what you think.

Listening now, all the uk funky stuff is pretty great. Good blends, particularly Like That into Love Dub.
Where did you get that L-Vis 1990 remix of Benga? Competely spastic, i'd like to see people dance to that :D
Curious as to what software you're using? Ableton?

Thanks for the link
I don't see why you should be ashamed of what you're using.
I have no idea what people consider to be kids toys for mixing but it obviously works most of the time.
I was just curious as to what goes wrong on the duff mixes as the software i'm aware of pretty much does all the beat matching for you.

Some funny comments on that Dubblestep thread.
I did a Dubblestep version of Aquafresh a while back to try and give it a bit more energy, spent most of a day on it then listened back to it and realised it was shit.

Nice mix of Aquafresh into Gutter Music by the way :)

Ahh, ok then. The mix is done on Virtual DJ. You just mix the files live, so the duff mixes are from where I've brought a new tune in slightly off the beat (or in the case of the start of SSB into Purple City, on entirely the wrong beat ) - so exactly the same sort of mistakes one might make with records, basically.
Apologies for being all coy about it. I am fairly sure it has a bad rep though - I'm sure I've heard Spyro for one slagging off VDJ as basically a cheat mechanism for wannabe youngers who want to sound more skilled than they are. Personally I reckon there are points to be made on both sides. :)

i dont think anyone gives a fuck anymore really, it's easier to mix on ableton or whatever, but it can be really boring to watch in a club, likewise everyone likes watching a dude play vinyl best but it's easier to trainwreck. swings and roundabouts. both have their place.

Whereas I'm giving them the software and the trainwrecks, so it's the best of both worlds. Oh hang on.... ;)
Saving up to buy Ableton and then decks btw. Won't be an overnight thing though.

If you CAN bring things in off beat and make mistakes ala vinyl how could it possibly be cheating?
I'm with Tom on this I mix most stuff by hand/ear but I play a lot through Traktor Scratch Pro which gives you 2 virtual decks that you can auto sync to whatever you are playing through the control vinyl. I use that to do blends of whole tracks or mixes that i'd otherwise not have the time to get in.
The whole concept of cheating is a silly one these days, if it sounds good and makes people dance it is good.

Will do, Benny :D . Have a good time in India.
And thank you, h.a.v. The tentativeness is just the way I am, for better or worse.
