Some dark ambient to get you started:

Lustmord -> The Place where the Dark Stars Hang, Stalker (with Robert Rich), The Monstrous Soul, Heresy
Inade -> Burning Flesh, The Incarnation Of The Solar Architects, Aldebaran
Herbst9 -> From A Dark Chasm Below, Buried Under Time and Sand

can we discuss about what exactly is the meaning of 'dark' in this context?
for me it's a fundamentally uncomfortable term only for reasons of pc
can we describe better what sort of music this term is referring to??
is there any overlap with 'black' or blackness? is it about scariness?
i'm sure there must be a more descriptive alternative? (other than 'moody'), if not we can certainly coin one :D

'atmospheric' is better, it means echoey, isnt it? ;)

Let's Talk About Ceps
SPK, Zamia Lehmanni (Songs Of Byzantine Flowers) - ludicrous name, awesome album.

The original Quake soundtrack is pretty cool, too - atmospheric ambient minimal-ish industrial. It's by Trent Reznor, but don't worry, he keeps his gob shut throughout.

Good questions Sufi ...

Right,
just to add to the general twilight, as already noted.
'Dark' ok - Sunno))) "It Took The Night To Believe", "Black One" as MMS notes.
Probably 'scary' for some pc's.
Rush Repuglicans should be made to hear this with headphones strapped on.
SPK's "Liechenschrei" (sp.?) was dark, borderline 'scary',
the Godflesh crew definitely have pulled more then their own weight in the struggle.

or 'Dark' as in 'dark ambient'.
Tim Hecker has some beautiful pieces in this territory on his latest, "Imaginary Country".

All taken with a 'different strokes' attitude as one's dark is another's light.
Sidestep genre police and dive in- plus there are probably more then a thread from previous dark music musings...

Wild Palms
Lurker of Chalice are pretty good, side project of the guy from Leviathan (American Black Metal Solo project), not all soundscapes some more songey bits but all pretty dark and ambient.

maybe a bit surreal, but The Residents - Eskimo is pretty good also.... icey soundscapes and weird grunts

Kevin Martin (of The Bug) but out these dark ambient compilations on virgin a while back called "Isolationism", which is pretty much tryig to define dark ambience, well worth checking out as they feature a range of people from Keiji Haino to Aphex Twin and Scorn, across the noise/electronica/industrial spectrum.

Worth looking at Plague Recordings for more on the Deathprod-style of dark ambient.

The free netlabel Dark Winter is also worth a gander if you don't want to spend any pennies/steal music.

Burial Hex... has a Lustmording about it, just around the eyes... this stuff seems a lot better than most of the little fellahs that try being scary... and some sections actually do get under your skin in the right time and the right place...

Nice one Ness ... easily overlooked as it's not so 'in print' is it ?

Don't know if it is still in print and how many copies were pressed,
picked up mine in my youth. Czukay did however "play" this number
at his recent gig at the Roundhouse in London.

I think this Biomutanten was off tape/video,
but he did play guitar/synths on some of his/Can's other tracks.

The gig was a funny one: presentation, videos on a big screen, Holger was in a good mood telling funny stories between the numbers and then playing some.

The most amazing thing was his weird internal promo video for the salesforce of EMI
(mentioned at http://www.czukay.de/history/discography/index.html).

Oh yeah Ness, thanks for the gig report.

There was a thread on ilx recently about tunes with big bass sounds and I think that Bio Mutanten (or maybe it's the other side) has to be one of the hugest. On the vinyl it's immense anyway.

Not necessarily the first guy who comes to mind for 'dark' but some other great atmospheric stuff he's done -

The 20 minute Mirage on Good Morning Story. Great hazy humid drone.

Canaxis I guess, just wonderful that.

Mystery R.P.S. (No. 8) on Full Circle.

Most of Moving Pictures.
