Fuck London

Corpsey

bandz ahoy
I moved to London in 2015, far, far too late.

TBF I lived in Bristol for about 5 years and I think it's great, but most of my friends back in 2009 were based in London, it was the years of parties, clubs, fun. And when I moved there it was entering the era of settling down, marriage, kids. Still enjoy living there, though mostly for the cultural options it provides (galleries, cinemas, food, etc.)

Yeah, also in Hoxton, but an old git now so I don't go out as much bar a few pints. Obviously even that's taken a huge hiding the last year. Pre-pandemic I was a Cafe Oto regular alongside @john eden and a few others. Still best venue and programming in the country to my mind. I'm not much use with dance music and related.

Even the little places I would've advised for a stroll around or a look in a record shop I don't even know if they're still open and accessible.

Yep. London will be completely reinventing itself over the next few years. Might be good (empty buildings) might be bad (not sure how post-COVID legislation will shake out in terms of going out, licensing, noise restrictions, cops etc)

My partner is more inclined to move away since lockdown and I am sure that will be true of lots of people.

Certainly the idea that we need to be in London because of an office job is less tenable now.

As a provincial looking in from the outside, from a city so far out of the loop it's not a satellite but Pluto, I have always found London to be incredibly exciting. The music, the nights out, roaming central streets in the dark just absorbing the sights and sounds of a city far bigger than anything I've ever lived in. Endless numbers of people listening to the music I like... not like at home where no one cares, helping put nights on, booking Om Unit, only for no fuckers to show up.

But the day time, the reality of a job with work-hard play-hard Nathan Barleys (I work in design, of sorts) and paying the living costs always scared me away.

Friends just paid £600k for a two bed terrace house in South London. Is now possibly the worst time to be paying London rates? It will be interesting to see what the property market does now so many can work from home.

It's the commercial property market that'll be really interesting. All those empty office buildings. I've heard it said that's why Boris and co were so keen to get shit opened up again, they weren't that interested in y'know saving Pret A Manger.

beachcomber, razorshells strung around the neck, blue rope
and lobster pots, seaweed desiccated by the sun. settle
here then? tankers and cargo ships on the horizon
the tideline of petrol canisters and cellophane
off-season shuttered cafes, ice-cream parlours
shops that sell buckets and spades, crab nets,
wind-breaks, beach mats, lilos
walking the promenade, drug dealers
hawk, spit territorially, hands down
the front of tracksuit trousers. Shall
we live here then? In the hope of
what? Getting something done?
Or just for the voluptuous sensation
of giving up, letting go, sinking, drowning,
going under.
