Fuck London

I'm actually proposing we surround the entirety of the view from your stupid Spitfire shed pub with concrete tower blocks.
Ironically, I'm saying concrete tower blocks would be a lot better than the low-density sprawl that characterizes Milton Keynes. (Now who's building strawmen?)

But it'd be better if they were in existing urban areas.

they're actual landfill now
Remember when Robbie Williams's label was anticipating that his forthcoming album was going to go, like, triple platinum in the first six months or something, so they pressed an absolutely insane number of CDs, and in the end it sold about twenty copies, so a construction company in China bought them all and smashed them up to use as fill material for a road it was building?

Quite literally MOR.

What shop would we most like to live in? Maybe WH Smith or Paperchase

WYH preferably ;)

all these empty high st gaffs wouldn’t take a lot to convert into living spaces, but the notion of shopping and its relationship to civic centres has surely changed....you have the physical foundations and the rest is cosmetic for any ex-building lags out there

and no, I’m not stoned

there is potential, though, for a surge in shopping once things get back to normal. all the predictions of how lots of people (certainly not all, but a large number) have pent up desire to splurge, go out and spend a chunk of the cash they didn't spend in the past 12 months, again, yes, I know many people are hurting financially as a result of the pandemic, but many economists predict there will be a burst of spending. so even though stores maybe be closed now, there's potential for them to quickly reopen under the same or new owners.

In much of Europe you're not dependent on the whims, wisdom and dubious taste of some dickhead town planner. You buy a parcel of land with services and build your own house, to your own specification, at vastly reduced cost compared to some UK Persimmon shithole.

In my town/village there does appear to be a certain laissez-faire attitude taken to what people can build... with the result that parts of it look like a total post-modern hodge podge of styles as though some people played exquisite corpse with houses.

I'm perplexed as to which forces of global capital would prevent the government from levying a punitively enormous land tax on unoccupied properties owned by non-doms or other foreign entities.

It's only a year or two since the NZ government banned foreign citizens from buying property there at all (except for commercial new build) which is a bit of a bummer as I'd quite like to retire there.

At worst, all that would happen is the ultra rich would fuck off and over time everyone else would move up a rung or two on the London property ladder, leaving room at the bottom. The rich would remain rich, and probably remain aloof, so it's not going to remake society, but I'm struggling to see a downside unless the economic contribution of paying to maintain 25k empty dwellings is a lot greater than I'd imagined.

Even better, let's relax regulations so people can live in cells on industrial estates
I have mates that pay up to 900pm to live in those.

having lived in a bank, community centre, and couple of office/warehouse complexes, so far I would say larger scale offices on upper floors were the most comfy.
bank was cool though
