the news cycle moving on thing was always inevitable but its still so weird isn't it. or actually it's more weird that certain events get the 'rolling 24 hour coverage' treatment where every headline is about it for a couple of weeks.

i'm in quetta. surprisingly there hasn't been that many people coming across the border to escape afghanistan. apparently, i mean this is what people i'm working with are telling me.

i'm deliberately not being very precise but it is kind of amazing to see how well integrated the taliban were/are here, it's like they were everyone's mates.

friend of mine from kunduz just updated his facebook status to saying that he's in germany, which is class, because it means he managed to get a visa out, and to europe too rather than the us

How are the Taliban doing in terms of government? Deserving yet of international recognition as a state actor? I doubt it but I haven't been keeping up.

edit: that is, "deserving" in the eyes of UN, I suppose.

it's still reading the tea leaves a bit, but overall, shite i would say. zero attempt at inclusion of literally any other faction in the government. healthcare has totally stopped as I understand it, the NGOs that ran the whole government health system haven't been paid so have stopped working. government offices still not open so no services at all. people are moving from kabul to kandahar because the economy is less of a mess and things are more organized down there. they're beating up protesters and gender segregating universities (even more than they already were).

worse than i expected. i think they're fucking it to be honest. but i don't have good information on all of this and might be out of date, missing things, emphasizing some things. another friend asked me for money last week, who isn't the type, so economically speaking i think things are pretty bad

Could be another mini end of history here, if this fundamentalist vision can't scale to compete with that of (relatively liberal) capitalist democracy.

Am I wrong about the Taliban having ambitions for a fundamentalist world order? Or maybe just some levant-adjacent order?

didn't he do two spells at west ham or something? it's great that people can have a second career as UN peacekeepers after theyve been league 1 goalkeepers
