Not sure about Vice these days- I don't read it much- but I saw this earlier & it's the first I've heard of it. I know there was the talk of new meth abundance earlier but meth & smack simultaneously is.. something

Well someone hasn't done their homework!

Not you - I meant whoever said these were the first pills ever to contain both uppers and downers, since purple hearts (Dexamyl) go back to the 50s. They were big with mods, apparently.

(As an aside, "downers" or "depressants" is a poor synonym for opioids, which have a very different effect from classic CNS depressants, such as booze, barbiturates and benzodiazepines. But these aren't even the first pills to feature a stimulant plus a strong opioid: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D-IX)

Never done anything stronger than codeine on that spectrum tbh, glad i never got into that realm

Sad/interesting that Afghanistan seems to remain a huge production hub for this stuff by the sound of things

It's going to be interesting to see how the new government interacts with all the people involved in drugs production. Remains to be seen, and its a whole bunch of complicated relationships that its obviously next to impossible to get much of a handle on. Best guess is that they'll let it continue more or less as it was, but with some of the players related to the old government taken out of three picture.

I vaguely remember that growing season is in the spring sometime, so at that point the sataillite imagery guys will do their thing and make some accurate estimates of how much poppy is being produced and where, so by that point we'll have some idea about that at least.

this thing about 'shisha' being the farsi term for crystal meth: i was once hanging out with this iranian girl somewhere in the middle east and asked her if she wanted to go for shisha, meaning smoking tobacco that tastes of lemon and watermelons, wheres she thought this english guy was casually asking her if she wanted to come with him and do some meth. she was very polite about it.

interesting. I just imagined the Taliban were in charge of the production and raking in loads of cash, but apparently not.

after what happened in the summer, no-one really seems to know. this article feels very right to me though.

before that, under the old government, basically any faction with some kind of power were making some money from drugs, taliban, local police, the old government, whoever.

Tablet K is a thing that contains meth and an opioid? Blimey. Not just people doing them both together, but someone saying "I know what needs to come in one pill so that it's more convenient than all that messing around that everyone has to do all the time".

Moody article about the drug problem here from the Telegraph

quite offensive photography. another entry into our long-standing tradition of depictions of hell, from bosch onwards. no attempt to depict reality really.

the addicts under the bridge in kabul story has been written a lot of times over the past ten or fifteen years. always the same bridge. there's a lot of ways to do it. it doesn't need to be as inhumane as this. i don't recognise the name of the photographer but this is a black mark against his name for sure.
