bad

cod
pretty much all flat fish (i think)
big sea fish like swordfish and marlin

good
mackerel (i think, though perhaps in the end all fish stocks will be over fished?)

prawns are often farmed now, so sutainable in a manner though i'm sure it brings it's own problems.

err what else?

Really? Do you know what was in them? I'm guessing heavy metals (\m/_  _\m/), organophosphates or the lasting legacy of Selafield...

It's fish with high mercury levels that you want to avoid, and apparently salmon is much lower than a lot of readily available commercial fish are in this. Tuna is the worst, especially canned dark tuna.

Sucks because spicy yellowtail is probably my favorite sushi roll. Now when I get sashimi I stick with salmon, even though it gives me migraines more than tuna. I don't generally eat cooked fish, tho, so this doesn't have a huge effect on me. I take omega 3 supplements (for heart health and bipolar, it's supposed to help somehow, I don't notice it helping any) and specifically look for the kind that are made from salmon.

there's also that nasty carbon footprint thing to consider...i'm always amazed to see "fresh" fish in supermarkets here in the states that's from, like, vietnam or someplace.

I made a Thai green curry with cuttlefish a while ago, it was LUSH.

Edit: before anyone asks, I had to do most of the work - turns out cuttlefish are shit at making curries.

The shrimp industry is evil. Shrimp farmers in South East Asia are often killed or beaten in the normal course of business (according an issue of the Ecologist from a few years ago). Has to do with a food that should be a very rare luxury in most parts of the world turning into something we feel we have a right to, at low low prices. I've found an organic fair trade one though. No more expensive. The trade off is just that you clean them yourself.

You can get prawns in the Sainsbury's Basics range now. And smoked salmon. And wine. And bottled water. The world's gone nuts, I tell you.

I really hate those packs of pre cooked peeled prawns, they taste weird like they have been washed in chemicals or something...

Yeah, if you're going to eat a 'luxury' food you might as well at least shell out (ahem) a little extra and get something that actually tastes nice.

Budget luxury foods - not one of our better food fads right now.
