"sickest, most insane sonics" guitar music edition

another installment in the beloved yet frequently ridiculed series.

guitars are encouraged, but other related forms of cacophony (experiments with distortion, feedback) are good too.

no limit to obscure shit. we also want to hear dad rock and landfill indie with fresh ears.

the wild use of panning on jimi's guitar here might easily be written off as dated or gimmicky. but it's actually great. it encourages you to imagine the sound not as something produced by a performer holding an intrument (the movement you're hearing would be impossible if that were the case) but as an independent entity with a life of its own. audio animation. a comet careening through space (morphing in timbre and pitch as it does).

I'm with Padraig in that most guitar solos are uninteresting. They typically work best in heavier genres- theres congruency between the innate ridiculousness of the guitar solo and metal/hardcore/noise music.

Ive also always liked Gregg Ginns solos. Just confidence manning his way through atonal nonsense so convincingly you start to buy it. Alot of the more shred based solos of metal sound like Ginn solos but all the correct notes are played.

and taking that style to its conclusion you get the no wave guys. Always thought this solo sounded like a man strangling a small animal with his bare hands

underappreciated collection by me

think Ive posted this a few times. and it looks like he's actually doing foly for an animated movie. making every sound possible with the instrument

the physicality of the noisey bits is self evident but theres an animated quality to the loop based somber bits. sounds layered like lights pirouetting onto the screen in fantasia

this thread's off to a surprisingly strong start, tbh. haven't gone through these yet but looking forward to doing so.

I went to a Sunn O gig that was one of the most tactile sonic experiences I've had. You're standing there in a room where you can literally see the air vibrating from oscillations of dust particles under the guitar drones. Then one more layer is added, and the air changes. And another and another. Don't know whether I actually liked it. I felt a bit violated, had to take a shower afterwards.

I would have liked to see Glenn Branca live though.
