This is the vanguard aesthetic of the youth (and beyond). it is whats cool today. a freind of mine calls it 'gay demon fairy.' weve gestured towards it in a few different threads but I think it warrants its own look

I think a few more popular artists have picked up on this trend but have channeled it in a pre fab, heavily nostalgia manner that doesn't feel just right. Im not sure myspace chic (despite the name) is entirely nostalgia driven, or weve reached the detachment point and nostalgia has little to do with the form running of its own symbolic energy

This style has been in beta for years but I think weve reached a final form and saturation point as evidenced by me going out tonight and noticing it.

*Also realizing now that trying to promote my tattooing has brushed me up with thousands of these people and that probably was an influence for the thread.

That I cant exactly show you the style without plainly linking to a bunch of irl person's socials fits with recent conversations on coolness- "if you know, you know."

How can we quantify it and algorithmically operationalize it?
I dont think this is happened yet on a mass scale. 100 gecs is almost there- but they are too ironic and arent the right brand/amount of dark

While I don't "know" yet, I will eventually.

In greater seriousness, memes are something of a natural resource of the 21st century.

certain Soundcloud rappers were probably the earliest bastion of the movement, someone like XXXtentacion isnt a bad example, but I think its no longer just a rap aesthetic nor an aesthetic predominatley for grade schoolers

Would you say its describable as normative emo?

the above pictures are from a posh contemporary art gallery in Berlin. that the style is currently in these spaces suggests a few things- one, that its no longer just a youth movement, and two, amongst others, that its a completely realized and pure symbolic form; the pathos that a word like 'emo' suggests no longer has any iterative force in the product

i remember when those shoes became popular, the really big balenciaga ones, it's when i realized i was not part of the hip and young anymore.

do you think what you describe as myspace chic overlaps with the aesthetic of balenciaga? i wanted to do a thread on it but didn't know how to formulate, what i noticed is that this brand got really omnipresent. from putting out exclusive variants of crocs to having collaborations with the simpsons and releasing binman or blue-collar jackets for thousands of dollars. lots of rap songs about it as well.

I think theres an overlap here for sure. I dont know enough about fashion whether to say if Balenciaga is just responding to the trend or actively influencing it.
